Been seeing a lot of folks here debating American Gold Eagles vs. Gold Buffalos for their IRA. I'm in a similar boat and wanted to get some more opinions, especially from those who've been doing this longer than I have. I've got a decent chunk of my portfolio, probably around $350k currently, allocated to precious metals – mostly gold and some silver, sitting in a Gold IRA. Inherited a good portion of it, frankly, from my grandfather's timber business, and the focus has always been long-term generational wealth preservation, not quick flips.
My advisor, who's usually pretty on the ball, leans slightly towards the Eagles, citing the legal tender status and wider recognition as key factors for potential future liquidity. He argues that in a true SHTF scenario (which honestly, I don't really anticipate, but you prepare for everything, right?), the Eagles might be easier to offload or even use. But then I read about the Buffalo's 24k purity, which just feels more substantial to me. It's that pure gold, unadulterated. I'm based here in Spokane, and while I have a couple of local dealers I trust, I'm thinking more about the national and even international market down the line.
I recently added another 20oz to the stack, split between the two to diversify, but I'm looking at another significant purchase within the next six months, probably another $50-75k worth of gold for the IRA. This isn't just about market value for me; it's also about what holds its appeal and intrinsic value over decades, for my kids and grandkids. Is the marginal premium difference on Eagles really worth the perceived "advantages" in everyone's experience? Or is the Buffalo's purity the real winner for pure wealth preservation through time? What factors are you all weighing most heavily when making these choices for your own IRAs?
