Alright, so I'm trying to figure out the best gold coins to stack in my IRA, and this whole American Eagle vs. Buffalo debate is seriously making my head spin. I’ve currently got about $180k in my Gold IRA with a mix of each, but I'm looking to add another solid chunk – maybe $50k – before I really start dialing back my marketing exec grind here in Minneapolis. The goal is to retire early, probably by 55, so I’m really trying to maximize every dollar for that sweet, sweet freedom.
My advisor keeps pushing the Eagles, citing the fractional sizes and lower premiums on the 1 oz. but then I hear folks swear by the Buffalos for their pure 24k status and supposedly better resale value down the line. I get the collector premium argument with the Eagles, but sometimes I just want simple, pure gold. Anyone have strong opinions either way? Are you guys seeing a significant difference in liquidity or premiums when buying/selling between these two? I’m thinking long-term here, obviously, but also want to be smart about what I'm accumulating.
Another thing that’s always in the back of my mind is those pesky RMDs once I hit 73. I've been playing around with that RMD Calculator from Gold IRA Blueprint – that thing is a lifesaver, seriously – just trying to visualize what those distributions will look like. It makes me even more conscious of selecting the right assets now to make those future withdrawals as smooth and profitable as possible. Does the type of coin really impact RMD calculations in practice, or is it more about the overall dollar value?
Anyway, hit me with your thoughts. Eagles or Buffalos for a diversified early retirement portfolio? Or am I overthinking this whole thing and should just focus on buying whichever has the lower premium at the moment?
