As someone who's been all-in on gold for over two decades now, mostly through my IRA, the American Gold Eagle vs. American Gold Buffalo debate always pops up. I've got a decent chunk of change tied up in gold, pushing towards that million-dollar mark if the market keeps doing what it's doing. When I retired from the auto industry here in Detroit, knowing my pension was solid but wanting more inflation protection, physical gold just made sense. It’s been a great hedge against all the craziness we’ve seen over the years.
For me, the Eagles have always been my go-to. I love the classic design, and let's be real, the fact that they're 22k means they're a bit tougher. I'm not planning on rattling my coins around in a jar, but that extra durability just adds a layer of comfort. Plus, the recognition factor is huge. Almost everyone knows an American Gold Eagle. I’ve heard plenty of stories about people trying to offload Buffalos and getting a slightly more quizzical look from some dealers who are just used to the Eagles as the standard.
That said, I totally get the appeal of the Buffalos. The pure 24k gold is undeniably attractive – for purists, that's key. And the design is beautiful, no argument there. A buddy of mine from the plant, who got into gold around the same time I did, swears by them. He says if you're buying pure gold, you should get PURE gold, plain and simple. He's probably got a higher percentage of his portfolio in Buffalos than I do in Eagles, and he's doing just fine.
So, I'm curious to hear from others. Beyond the 22k vs. 24k and the design preferences, are there other factors weighing into your decision? Do you think one has a significantly better resale market or liquidity for an IRA liquidation when that time eventually comes? My gold IRA is quite large, so thinking about future liquidity is always on my mind. What’s your experience been?
