Hey everyone! Elizabeth from Atlanta here – long-time lurker, first-time poster in the Gold IRA section. As an accountant, I'm pretty meticulous about my investments, and after years of contributing to my old 401k, I'm finally looking to do a direct rollover into a Gold IRA. I’ve done a ton of research on the tax benefits of a Gold IRA (seriously, the pre-tax growth and tax-deferred distributions are chef's kiss), but now I'm diving into the actual metal choices, and that's where I need some help!
My biggest dilemma right now is between American Gold Eagles and American Gold Buffalos. I’m planning on rolling over about $75,000, and I want to make sure I’m making the most informed decision. I really like the idea of both for their IRA eligibility. The Eagles, with their 22-karat purity and alloy content, seem to offer a bit more durability, which is appealing for long-term storage in an IRA facility. But then the Buffalos, being 24-karat pure, just look so… shiny and substantial! I've seen some dealers selling Eagles for around a 6-7% premium over spot and Buffalos often closer to 8-9%, but that can fluctuate so much. Am I overthinking the purity difference for an IRA that I won't be physically holding?
I’m especially curious to hear from those of you who have already gone through a rollover. What did you choose and why? Did you consider the potential resale market or future liquidity when making your decision? Also, has anyone found one type to consistently have a better buy-back price from dealers? Any insights on premiums you’ve paid recently would be super helpful too. I’m thinking of allocating about 20% of my rollover funds to gold, so every percentage point counts!
