Okay, so I finally did it – rolled over about $75k from my old 401k into a new Gold IRA. Pretty stoked about getting some real assets in my portfolio, especially with all the market craziness lately. I run a small marketing agency here in Denver, and honestly, the thought of having something tangible feels a lot better than just numbers on a screen right now. The company I went with has been pretty helpful, but now I'm at the point of choosing the specific coins, and I'm a bit stuck between American Gold Eagles and Gold Buffalos.
My account rep gave me the rundown on both, and I get the basic differences – purity, collectible vs. pure bullion, etc. The Eagles have that 22k durability and the lower premium if I ever wanted to liquidate quickly, which is appealing. But then the Buffalos are 24k pure gold, which just sounds better, you know? Like, if I'm buying gold, I want the PUREST gold. I'm not really looking to play the numismatic game or anything, this is purely for long-term wealth preservation and a hedge against inflation. I plan on holding these coins for the next 15-20 years, until I'm ready to properly retire.
Anyone here have strong opinions or experience with one over the other for an IRA? Is the 24k purity of the Buffalo really that big of a deal for an IRA investor like me, or am I overthinking it? Should I just split it 50/50? My total allocation to gold is about 15% of my overall investments. Really appreciate any insights from those of you who've been through this decision before!
