I've been thinking a lot lately about diversifying the gold in my IRA, and this American Eagle vs. Buffalo debate keeps popping up. It's been about five years since my late husband passed, and I've really been focused on making sure his legacy is secure. He was always so meticulous with our finances, especially after we hit our 50s, and moving a decent chunk of our retirement into gold was one of his last big ideas. We're sitting on about $75k in physical gold in the IRA right now, mostly Eagles just because that's what the dealer in Raleigh recommended back then.
Now, I'm starting to wonder if I should be adding some Buffalos into the mix. I know the Eagles have that 22k purity with the copper and silver, which gives them a bit more durability. And honestly, they're beautiful coins. But then you hear about the Buffalos and their 24k pure gold. In my head, pure gold just sounds... purer, if that makes sense. Like, less fuss, just straight-up gold content. Is that really as big a deal as some people make it out to be for an IRA held for the long haul?
My main goal here is protecting value and maintaining flexibility for whenever my daughter or even her future children might need this nest egg. I'm not looking to trade these things every other week. So, for a long-term hold in an IRA, does the 24k purity of the Buffalo really offer a significant advantage over the Eagle's higher durability? Or is it more of a collector's preference than a strategic investment difference?
I'd love to hear from anyone else who's wrestled with this decision, especially if you're holding a similar amount in your IRA. Did you split your holdings? Go all-in on one? Any insights on liquidity or future resale value that might tip the scales one way or the other? I just want to feel confident I'm making the right choices to protect what my husband worked so hard for.
