Okay, so I've been seeing a lot of back and forth recently about American Gold Eagles versus American Gold Buffalos for IRAs, and I wanted to throw my two cents in and get some more opinions. I'm looking to add another chunk to my Gold IRA this year, probably around $50k, and for the last few years, I've primarily gone with Eagles. I'm a doctor out here in Boston, and while my portfolio is pretty diversified, gold's been a solid performer for me, especially over the past 5-7 years, acting as a nice hedge. I initially started with Eagles because of the fractional options and the general familiarity, but I'm legitimately wondering if I should pivot to Buffalos for this next purchase.
My main thought process behind Eagles has always been the recognition – they're just ubiquitous, right? Everyone knows them, which theoretically should make them easier to liquidate if that day ever comes. Plus, having that small copper and silver alloy always made me feel like they were a bit more durable, less prone to dings and scratches, which is a minor but still a factor when you're talking about holding physical metal for decades. I currently have a mix of 1 oz and 1/2 oz Eagles in my IRA, but I'm thinking 1 oz for whatever I buy next.
Where the Buffalo argument starts to get interesting for me is the 24k purity. There's just something inherently appealing about holding pure gold, and while I understand the differences are minimal in terms of melt value, the "pure gold" aspect feels a bit more... elegant, maybe? I'm not sure if that's just a psychological thing or if it translates into a real premium come sale time. I've heard some arguments about Buffalos potentially commanding a slightly higher premium due to their purity, but I've also heard the opposite, that Eagles are more liquid. It's confusing to say the least!
So, for those of you who've gone deep into this – especially anyone with a significant allocation in their Gold IRA – what's your current thinking? Have you noticed any significant differences in premiums when buying or selling either? Is the 24k purity really a big enough differentiator to make the switch from Eagles? Or am I overthinking this entirely, and at the end of the day, a troy ounce of gold is a troy ounce of gold regardless of which coin it is, as long as it's IRA-approved?
