Been thinking a lot about silver lately, especially with all the talk about physical vs. paper, and I keep coming back to the industrial demand side of things. It feels like everyone's so focused on the monetary aspect, which is obviously a huge part of it, but are we underestimating just how much stuff silver goes into that we can't really do without?
I’m an insurance agent here in Omaha, so obviously, I’m all about risk management and diversification. My retirement portfolio, sitting around the $200k mark right now, has a decent chunk of gold, but I also diversified into a Silver IRA a couple of years ago – probably about 15% of my precious metals is in silver. I'm not looking for a quick buck, more for long-term stability and a hedge against inflation. But when I look at how much silver is used in solar panels, EVs, even medical tech... it just seems like demand is only going to skyrocket, regardless of what the Fed does with interest rates.
The supply side always seems to be a bigger headache too. It's not like gold where primary mining is more common; a lot of silver is a byproduct. So, if industrial demand really starts eating into stockpiles, and mining can't keep up, that's got to put some serious upward pressure on prices, right? It just makes me feel a bit more secure in my silver holdings, even on days when gold is doing great and silver is lagging behind. I sometimes worry I'm too heavily invested in precious metals, but then I remember scenarios like this.
What are your thoughts on this? Am I overthinking the industrial demand angle, or is this a significant factor that doesn't get enough air time in the precious metals discussions? Are there any specific industries you see as being particularly impactful for silver's future?
