Okay, so I’ve been all-in on gold for my IRA for a few years now. Started it back in 2020 when everything felt super weird, pulled about $150k out of some tech stocks that were just… not inspiring confidence. Got myself set up with a pretty solid gold IRA, mostly 1oz American Gold Eagles, with a reputable custodian. Felt good, especially with all the inflation talk and everything happening down here on the border with both economies always in flux. It just feels safer, you know?
But lately, I’ve been thinking more about diversification within precious metals. My business is pretty cyclical, and while gold feels like the ultimate safe haven, I started looking at silver. I’ve always seen silver as gold’s slightly wilder, younger sibling – more industrial uses, more volatility, but also a lot of upside potential if things really go sideways, or even if manufacturing picks up globally. After some serious research and talking to my metals dealer (who’s thankfully based out here near El Paso, makes things easier), I decided to pull the trigger.
Last month, I rolled over about $25k of my gold holdings into silver. Specifically, I went with American Silver Eagles and some Canadian Silver Maples. The premium on silver is a little higher than I expected, but I felt it was worth it for the liquidity and recognition. It pushed my total IRA portfolio just over the $175k mark. Now, my IRA is roughly 85% gold and 15% silver. The thought process was to get exposure to that industrial demand side and the potential for a bigger percentage jump if the right conditions hit, without losing the bedrock stability of gold. Plus, the price per ounce makes it feel like I own a lot more physical metal, which is kind of satisfying.
Anyone else here diversified their precious metals IRA with silver after being primarily gold? What were your reasons? And what specific types of silver did you go for? I’m still learning the ropes on the silver market compared to gold, so eager to hear other experiences.
