Diversifying out of stocks and into gold - best move I ever made

I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter lately from folks worried about their 401ks, so I figured I’d share my experience. For years, I just let my money sit in whatever mutual funds my company offered, didn't really think about it. But after seeing the market go nuts, then tank, then kinda wobble back up again – and especially after a couple of buddies in the construction business got absolutely hammered – I started feeling pretty uneasy.
I'm a believer in things you can touch, you know? Bricks, steel, good tools. Stocks always felt a bit… ephemeral. So about two years ago, when my 401k was sitting pretty around $350k, I started looking into how I could get some of that into gold. It was a bit of a process, honestly. Didn’t want to mess up any tax stuff, so I spent a good few weeks researching custodians and rollover rules.
Ended up doing a partial rollover – kept a chunk in more traditional investments just in case, but moved a significant portion, about $150k, into physical gold. Best decision I’ve made in my investing journey, hands down. Seeing those shiny bars in the vault statement just hits different than a line item on a brokerage account. With all the inflation we’ve seen, and the general global instability, it feels like a real anchor for my retirement. What are other folks doing to protect their savings from all this insanity right now?
One thing that really helped me get a handle on the numbers was playing around with the Gold IRA Calculator. It gave me a much clearer picture of potential returns and how diversifying could impact my overall portfolio value down the line. It's a neat tool if you're trying to figure out what a move like this could look like for you.
