Been seeing a lot of skepticism lately about precious metals, especially silver, and wanted to share my own experience. I retired from the Street a few years back – had a good run, but always kept a significant chunk of my portfolio in metals. Started with gold back in the late 90s, when everyone was still laughing at the "gold bugs." My old CIO used to call it my "doomsday insurance."

Fast forward to 2008, and that "insurance" bought me a hell of a lot more than peace of mind. But even after that, I noticed something. Gold was doing its thing, but silver felt... undervalued. So around 2012, I started diversifying some of my physical gold holdings into silver bars. Started with some 10oz bars, then moved into kilos. Didn't go crazy, maybe 10-15% of my metals portfolio, but it added up over time. People thought I was nuts, chasing the "poor man's gold."

Well, turns out that "poor man's gold" has been doing some heavy lifting for me since then. The industrial demand, the limited supply – it's a different animal than gold, and I’ve seen some serious gains. Living comfortably here in my Tribeca condo, enjoying retirement, and honestly, a big part of that is due to those silver allocations. My Gold IRA is still heavily gold, but I built up a nice stash of physical silver outside of that.

Anyone else here feel like silver gets overlooked? Or am I just a lucky old Wall Streeter who guessed right? Curious to hear some other perspectives, especially from those who've been in this game for a while.

Interesting perspective. While I can definitely see how physical silver could have been a strong performer for you, especially if you got in early, I'm not entirely convinced it's the "best move" for everyone, particularly for those looking closer to retirement. Liquidity can be a real concern when you're looking to actually use those assets for income, and storage costs can eat into returns over the long haul. Gold often has a bit more universal appeal and easier transaction if you need to offload quickly.

Sounds like you had a good strategy that worked for your specific situation though, so fair play!

Totally get this. I made a similar move a few years back, not with gold into silver initially, but moving a substantial chunk of old 401k funds into a Gold IRA. The peace of mind alone has been worth it, especially with all the market fluctuations lately. Watching that gold perform has been a nice little bonus too.

That's interesting that you started with gold and then diversified into silver. What prompted the move to silver specifically? Was there a particular market signal or personal conviction that nudged you in that direction?

Awesome to hear about your positive experience! It's great when a well-thought-out investment strategy pays off. For anyone else considering physical silver, it's super important to think about secure storage options. Whether that's a home safe (rated for precious metals, of course) or a reputable third-party depository, don't skimp on security. Your local coin dealer or a company specializing in precious metals IRAs can often recommend good options!
