Hey everyone,
Just stumbled across this article/video about the 1985 Chinese Gold Panda coin: They Only Made This Gold Coin Once. It’s a pretty cool deep dive into a specific year and how unique the early Panda series was with its annual design changes. As someone who's always been a fan of rare coins and precious metals for diversification (especially as I inch closer to thinking about supplementing my retirement income), this really caught my eye. I usually lean towards more established bullion like Eagles or Maples, but the numismatic value on some of these earlier Pandas is seriously compelling. I mean, only made once? That’s the kind of scarcity that really gets investors' attention, not just collectors.
It makes me think about some of the earlier silver rounds I picked up years ago just because I liked the design, and some of those have appreciated surprisingly well beyond the spot price. Of course, that's not why I bought them, but it’s a nice bonus! My kids, when they're older, will probably think I'm crazy for having physical metal in a safe, but it's part of my strategy. This 1985 Panda, though, is a whole different ballgame value-wise. It's a good reminder that doing your research on specific mintages and historical context can really pay off if you're looking to add a bit of a "trophy asset" to your precious metals holdings, rather than just raw weight.
What do you all think? Any of you guys got any of these older, rarer Pandas in your stacks? Or do you tend to stick to the more common bullion for pure weight exposure? Curious to hear your thoughts on mixing numismatic value with basic precious metal investment strategy, especially for long-term goals.
