Hey everyone, just watched this video from Gainesville Coins and thought it was a pretty good breakdown of gold premiums: Confused by Gold Premiums? Here's What They Actually Mean.
I've been stacking for a while now, and honestly, the whole premium thing used to confuse the heck out of me when I first started. I remember buying some fractional gold way back when (before I really knew what I was doing) and paying a premium that, in hindsight, was probably way too high. This video really crystallizes why those premiums exist – the manufacturing costs, dealer overhead, etc. It's a good reminder that not all gold is created equal in terms of true value vs. what you pay for it. Especially important for those of us trying to protect our retirement savings or even just leave something tangible for the kids later on.
For me, I mostly stick to larger denominations now to minimize those premiums, unless it's a specific coin I really want for the collection. What are your strategies for dealing with premiums? Do you guys find yourself paying attention to them the most when buying bars, coins, or maybe even those smaller novelty items? Curious to hear what tricks and tips others have picked up over the years!
