    Hey everyone,

Just read this article from Gold IRA Blueprint about the Australian Lunar Gold Coins from the Perth Mint: https://goldirablueprint.com/australian-lunar-gold-coins/

It got me thinking, these coins are seriously beautiful. I've always been a fan of unique bullion, and the whole Zodiac series really appeals to me. I've actually got a couple of the earlier Lunar I series coins tucked away from when I first started diversifying my portfolio, mostly as a hedge against inflation for my kids' future college funds. Back then, they were a pretty solid buy, and I've seen some impressive appreciation on those over the years. What do you all think about these as a long-term hold? Are you more into the classic Eagles or Buffalos, or do you dabble in more numismatic/collectible bullion like these?

I'm always looking for ways to round out my precious metals allocation, especially now that I'm getting closer to retirement. Might be time to revisit these. Anyone here actively collecting the Lunar III series? Would love to hear your experiences and if you think they still hold the same potential as the earlier runs. Let me know your thoughts!

Totally agree, the Perth Mint Lunar series are fantastic. I picked up some of the Dragon and Snake coins a few years back for my Gold IRA. The premiums were a bit higher than plain bullion, but the resale market for these has been surprisingly strong; I actually sold a few last year when rebalancing and got a decent profit even accounting for the dealer spread. Definitely worth considering if you want something with potential numismatic value alongside the gold.

What a fantastic breakdown of the Lunar series, this was super insightful. I started my Gold IRA about five years ago with a mix of American Eagles and some Perth Mint coins, and the Lunar Dragons I picked up then have really held their value. It's great to see a detailed explanation of why these pieces are so popular beyond just their gold content.

While the Perth Mint Lunar series is undoubtedly beautiful, and I've held my share of them over the years, I've quietly started shifting my focus back to something a bit...less collectible. There's a subtle premium tied to these intricate designs and limited mintage numbers, and honestly, the thought of paying extra for aesthetics when the primary goal is wealth preservation feels a little indulgent these days. Call me old-fashioned, but give me a simple St. Gaudens or a Canadian Maple Leaf any day; the real intrinsic value is in the gold content, not the artistry.

The Lunar series is always a stunner. I actually picked up a full set of the Lunar II dragons from Perth Mint back in 2012 – the 1oz and then a couple of the smaller fractionals for my kids' birth years. Stored them with my Gold IRA provider in Delaware, which was a nice little geographic diversification since most of my physical gold is here in a vault in NYC. The premiums were a little higher than regular Eagles, but the resale value on these things has been consistently strong, especially for the lower mintage years and the full sets. They make great gifts, too; my nephew got the 2021 Ox from me for his graduation, hoping he holds onto it!

The Perth Mint's Lunar Series is gorgeous, no doubt, but as a Gold IRA investor, I actually lean more towards American Gold Eagles or Canadian Gold Maples for my holdings. The slightly higher premiums on the Lunar coins, while justified by their artistic value and limited mintage, can eat into your long-term IRA gains. My strategy for my Gold IRA (which is around 350k currently) has always been maximum gold content for the lowest premium, so I can hold more actual ounces. I do have a few Lunar Dragon coins in my personal stack outside the IRA though, because they're just too beautiful to pass up!

The Perth Mint Lunar series... now there's a blast from the past. I remember picking up my first couple of those, a few of the 1/4 oz Dragons, back in '01 or '02, when premiums were a bit more... reasonable. Always appreciated the artistry, but frankly, for a long-term play in physical, I've always preferred the larger bars. Easier to stack, less fussy with the fractional premiums over the decades, though I do have a soft spot for the Kookaburras.

Totally agree on the Lunar series; they're stunning. I picked up a couple of the 2020 Year of the Mouse 1/4 oz gold coins directly from a dealer in Richmond back when things were still relatively quiet. Paid about $520 each then, and just checked today – they're comfortably over $600 now. Not only is it a solid investment, but they're genuinely beautiful pieces to hold.

@Steven Mitchell - Sounds like you got in at a great time with those Perth mints. I started my Gold IRA around the same time, though I diversified a bit more into Royal Mint Sovereigns and some older circulated US gold. Funny enough, I've always kept an eye on the Lunar series premiums. From what I’ve seen, the dragons, especially the earlier ones, tend to hold their value and even appreciate a bit more aggressively than some other designs.

Glad to see some love for the Lunar series outside of the usual bullion coins. I picked up a few of the 1/4 oz Dragon and Snake coins back in 2012 and 2013 for my Gold IRA, specifically because of the limited mintage and incredible artistry that I knew would appeal to collectors. The market for those designs really took off, and I've seen some impressive premiums develop over the years that definitely outpaced my initial expectations, making them a smart play beyond just the gold content.

Love the Perth Mint Lunar series! I actually started stacking those in my gold IRA back in 2018 when I began seriously looking into diversifying my retirement savings beyond just stocks. The artistry is fantastic, and knowing I've got tangible precious metals with potential numismatic value in addition to the gold itself just feels right. Definitely one of the smarter moves I made with my 401k rollover, especially considering the tax advantages.

It's interesting to see the Australian Lunar series still commanding such attention. I started my physical gold journey with a few of the earlier Snakes and Horses – back when premiums weren't quite as… *robust*. While the designs are undeniably beautiful, for anyone looking at them purely as an investment vehicle for a Gold IRA, you really need to factor in that collector's premium. I've personally opted for more generic rounds and bars for the bulk of my ~300k allocation in my Gold IRA here in Portland, favoring lower premiums over intricate artwork, but still keep a few smaller lunar coins for the *aesthetics*.

Man, these Lunar Series coins are beautiful. I picked up a few of the Dragon and Snake when I rolled over part of my 401k into a Gold IRA earlier this year – my advisor in Honolulu suggested them for their aesthetic appeal and potential numismatic value down the line. I'm still pretty new to the gold game, but is there any specific year or animal that experienced collectors here really look for beyond just the bullion value?

Honestly, I used to be all about the American Gold Eagles, stacking them like crazy back when I first got into precious metals in '18. But then I saw my buddy's Lunar Pig, the detail on that thing just blew me away. Ended up snagging a 1oz 2020 Lunar Mouse for my own Gold IRA and now I'm hooked on the series. The numismatic value potential on top of the gold itself is a nice bonus; hard to find that kind of artistic flair from other government mints.

Just funded my first Gold IRA a few months back, mostly with American Gold Eagles, but these Lunar coins are *gorgeous*. My advisor didn't even mention them as an option. Is there any practical difference in investing in these zodiac coins versus, say, a standard Buffalo or Eagle, besides the aesthetic? I'm talking about premiums, liquidity, things like that. I'm still learning the ropes and trying to make sure I'm making sound decisions for my retirement, especially after seeing what interest rates are doing in Savannah right now.

Okay, this series is beautiful, I’ll give it that, and I know everyone here loves them, but hear me out: when it comes to *true* long-term wealth preservation in a Gold IRA, I'm just not convinced premium numismatic coins are the smartest move. I mean, my little stack, which took me ages to build up to just shy of 30k, is all in bars and Eagles for a reason; those premiums on the Lunar series add up fast and can really eat into your gains if you ever have to liquidate quickly.

@Steven Mitchell That's awesome you got in on the Lunar series early! I'm still building out my Gold IRA, only got about $30k in so far, mostly Eagles and a few Buffaloes from APMEX. I'm actually in Charleston, SC, and trying to plan out my contributions better. If you're near retirement, the RMD Calculator is super helpful for figuring out future growth and required distributions.

@Frank Rivera That's awesome you're getting some great pieces! I just started looking into rolling over an old 401k from a tech startup I was at into a Gold IRA myself, and these Lunar series coins keep catching my eye. My advisor here in SF mentioned them to me as well – specifically the Perth Mint, like in the article. Are you planning on holding onto them long-term, or do you see these as something with potential for appreciation even beyond the gold value itself? I'm trying to figure out which direction to go for my first few purchases.

Interesting discussion on the Lunar series. I've got a couple of those myself, 2020 mouse and a 2022 tiger. Beautiful coins, no doubt. But honestly, as a Gold IRA investor, I find myself scratching my head sometimes at the premiums people are willing to pay for these "limited mintage" collector pieces. I mean, here in Kansas City, I can walk into a reputable dealer and pick up plain ol' AGEs or Buffalos for a much tighter spread. When I look at my overall portfolio, which is pushing the mid-five figures, I'm just asking myself if that extra 8-10% on a pretty coin is really working for me long-term, or if it's just a distraction from the primary goal of preserving wealth through physical gold. It's almost as if some folks are investing more in the *story* of the coin than the metal itself.

@Steven Mitchell - Terrific choice on the Eagles and Perth Mint coins. Five years in, you're past the initial jitters, I'm sure. I remember back in '08, right after the GFC really hit, I moved a significant chunk of my portfolio into physical gold—those Lunar Dragons from Perth were a no-brainer then, still are now. The premium wasn't too bad, and the secondary market on those has consistently been strong for me. For anyone just getting started or looking to deepen their understanding of asset allocation in a Gold IRA, *the Learning Center at https://learn.goldirablueprint.com/?forum has some truly insightful guides that helped me refine my strategy over the years.* Diversification within the metals spectrum, especially with those numismatic or semi-numismatic pieces, can really pay off in the long run.

I'm over in Denver and did a 401k rollover into a gold IRA myself a few years back, focusing mostly on American Gold Buffalos for my retirement savings. I've been eyeing some of the Lunar series myself, specifically for their potential collectible value on top of the regular precious metals appreciation and tax advantages. Thinking about diversifying beyond just the standard bullion.

@Michelle Collins, always good to hear from another Lunar series fan. I remember snagging a couple of the 2012 Year of the Dragon 1 oz coins when they first dropped; paid about $1,700 each not long after some particularly volatile market swings. Held onto those for years before selling them during a dip to rebalance into some palladium, only to see them shoot past $2k a year later! It's a bittersweet memory now, looking back from my place a ways down the road here in Memphis. Sometimes the best move is just to hold.

That's a great breakdown of the series, thanks! I've been eyeing some of the older Lunar III releases, specifically the ox and tiger, for my precious metals portfolio. Living in Birmingham, AL, it's not like I'm close to many specialty coin dealers. Are there any particular online wholesalers or auction sites you'd recommend for finding these with good grading, or is it mostly a matter of checking the major bullion dealers' secondary market sections? Just trying to avoid paying a massive premium on the spot price for a graded coin compared to a raw one.

@Sandra Green I totally get what you mean about beautiful coins versus actual investment strategy. I'm over here in Fresno, and while I appreciate the *art* of some of these coins, my Gold IRA is strictly business. I started socking away about $75k a few years back, and one thing that really cemented my strategy was looking at the Gold vs Stocks 10-year comparison on Gold IRA Blueprint. It really puts things in perspective when you're trying to figure out where the real long-term stability lies for your retirement.

Definitely see the appeal with the Lunar series' artistry, but personally, I've always prioritized weight and purity over collectible numismatic value for my IRA holdings. For my ~$75k gold IRA in Little Rock, I focused on things like American Gold Eagles and even some Canadian Maples, which often come with lower premiums when you're looking at pure ounces. While the Perth Mint's quality is undeniable, those higher premiums on limited-edition coins can eat into your actual gold acquisition, especially if your primary goal is long-term wealth preservation and not speculative collecting.

@Sandra Green Totally agree on the beauty of those Lunar coins! I've been eyeing a few myself, but like you, my main focus for gold is my IRA. I started seriously looking into a Gold IRA a couple years ago when I realized my old 401k wasn't hedging against inflation the way I wanted, especially living in Seattle with the cost of living here. After rolling over about $75k, I was really curious about the tax implications of future distributions. The Tax Calculator at Gold IRA Blueprint was a godsend. It showed me exactly how much I could save on taxes by holding physical gold in a self-directed IRA versus other options, which really solidified my decision.

I'm still learning the ropes with my gold IRA, just got it set up last August after selling off a chunk of my tech stocks that were getting a bit too volatile for my comfort. I've been looking at some of the physical options, and these Lunar Series coins look absolutely stunning. Are they typically considered a good premium for a gold IRA, or is it more about the aesthetic appeal and collectibility for most folks?

The Lunar Series is definitely a favorite of mine for combining collectibility with the intrinsic value of gold. I’ve picked up a few over the years, mostly the Dragons and Tigers; I just love how detailed the designs are. As a Raleigh-based investor, I'm always looking for assets with both numismatic and commodity appeal, and the Lunar coins fit that bill perfectly. The Gold vs Stocks 10-year comparison really puts things in perspective when you're weighing these types of physical assets against market trends.

@Timothy Reed - Smart move on those Lunar Dragons and Snakes for your Gold IRA. I can still kick myself for not going harder on the Pandas back in '09 and '10 when they were practically giving them away. For my own Gold IRA, I leaned heavily into Eagles and Buffaloes from 2005-2015, but always made sure to peel off a few thousand to grab some of those beautiful Perth Mint proofs. The premiums might sting a bit upfront, but the long-term collectibility of limited mintage series like the Lunars has proven to be a solid performer in my experience, especially given market volatility the last few years.

These Lunar Aussies are beautiful, but for my Gold IRA, I've always prioritized the more common bullion coins like AGEs and Maples for liquidity. When I was first setting up my account early last year, trying to figure out how much of my old 401k I could even roll over without tax penalties was a nightmare. I ended up using the IRA Calculator from Gold IRA Blueprint; it really helped me map out what kind of distributions I could expect and what percentage to allocate to physical gold. I actually moved a chunk of my portfolio into a Gold IRA earlier this year, about $70k worth, right before that last dip in the market – felt good to have some stability. Since then, I've found *The Gold IRA Handbook* by Michael J. Kosares to be a surprisingly practical read, especially for understanding the nuances of different gold options beyond just bullion. He breaks down the pros and cons of things like Perth Mint coins versus American Eagles really well, which I found useful navigating selections here in Boise. Worth a look if you're still digging into the various types of gold.

@Steven Mitchell I hear you on those Lunar Dragons – they’re gorgeous! I actually started my Gold IRA a bit later than you, about three years ago, after watching the market volatility from my office in downtown Boston with growing unease. I went with a heavy allocation of those very same Perth Mint Lunar series, specifically the Pigs and the Rats from '19 and '20. My financial advisor initially pushed hard for just Eagles and Maples, but I felt like adding a bit more aesthetic appeal, and frankly, a bit more collectibility, wouldn't hurt. So far, no regrets. The premium's held up beautifully, and it's nice to have something in the vault that feels a little less… utilitarian.

The Lunar series from Perth Mint is genuinely top-tier, not just for its aesthetic appeal but also for its consistent premium. I’ve been stacking these since the Series II Dragons back in 2012, and the appreciation, especially on the lower mintage years, has been a pleasant surprise in my Tulsa portfolio. Don't get me wrong, the Perth Mint coins are gorgeous, and the Lunar series is iconic. But honestly? For actual wealth preservation in a Gold IRA, I'm prioritizing pure weight and low premiums over intricate designs and collector appeal every single time. @Kenneth Parker, funny how these things swing. I picked up a roll of those same 2012 Dragons, 1oz, back then for a shade under spot, thinking they'd be nice stocking stuffers for the grandkids in a decade or two. Ended up holding onto most of them, and while $1,700/coin isn't exactly where I'm at with them now, the premium on these seems to be holding strong relative to just generic bullion. It makes a case for fractional, numismatic-leaning gold in a diversified portfolio, even for those of us who typically stick to the larger bars for wealth preservation from our place up here in Aspen.

Alright, these Lunar Gold Coins…man, they bring me back. I remember back in 2018, when things in the market started feeling really squirrelly, my financial advisor in Tampa, bless his heart, kept talking about diversification. I had about 180k in my portfolio then, mostly stocks, and my gut was just screaming. I pulled the trigger on converting a chunky 50k into a Gold IRA, and you know what? Those Perth Mint coins, specifically the 2018 Year of the Dog, were among the first physical assets I held. There’s something profoundly reassuring about that weight in your palm when the news cycle is going absolutely wild. It wasn't just an investment; it was peace of mind the size of a small, shiny frisbee.
