    The 3-step rollover process explained

Hey everyone, just stumbled across this article about Australian Kangaroo/Nugget gold coins: https://goldirablueprint.com/australian-kangaroo-nugget-gold-coins/

Found it pretty insightful, especially the bit about the changing designs each year. I've always been a fan of physical gold as part of a diversified portfolio, especially with all the volatility lately. I've got a small stack of Canadian Maples, but I've been eyeing some of these Kangaroos for a while now. The article mentions they started as "Nuggets" in '86, which is a cool historical tidbit I didn't actually know. From an investment perspective, I like the idea of coins that might accrue a bit more numismatic value over time due to their yearly design changes, even if the primary driver is still the gold content. It's a small potential upside, but hey, every bit helps when you're thinking about retirement savings, right? My wife and I are trying to really solidify our long-term plan, and a bit of physical like this feels like a smart, tangible hedge.

Anyone here already hold some Kangaroos? What are your thoughts on them compared to other popular bullion coins like Eagles or Maples? Do you think the changing design actually adds a noticeable premium in the secondary market, or is it mostly just a nice aesthetic feature? Would love to hear your experiences and perspectives!

Great thread, super helpful for anyone considering physical gold. I've been holding some Gold Kangaroos in my IRA for about three years now. When I was first setting up my account, I actually used the IRA Calculator at https://calculator.goldirablueprint.com/?forum. It really helped me visualize how different asset allocations, including a portion in physical gold like the Kangaroos, could impact my retirement projections. As someone in Minneapolis, with all the economic uncertainty lately, having that tangible asset has given me a lot of peace of mind.

Great thread on the Kangaroos! I just put about 8k into my Gold IRA earlier this year, mostly in those and some American Eagles. I found this super helpful spot on the U.S. Mint website about the specifics of what qualifies for an IRA – the metal purity requirements and all that. It really helped me double-check everything before I pulled the trigger with my custodian down here in Charleston.

Interesting overview of the Kangaroo coins. While I appreciate the aesthetic and historical significance, I've personally found them to be a less efficient store of value compared to American Gold Eagles or Canadian Maple Leafs when it comes to liquidity and resale premium. My last significant gold acquisition – a 200 oz purchase back in 2021 – was almost entirely in Eagles due to the tighter spreads I consistently see from dealers, particularly for larger transactions that align with a portfolio of over $5M.

I'm pretty new to all this, having just rolled a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA earlier this year – primarily into American Gold Eagles, honestly. I've been seeing these Kangaroo coins mentioned here and there, and they look stunning. For those of you who hold them, what's been your experience with liquidity if you ever needed to sell, compared to something like the Eagles? Is the premium usually higher on these?

Interesting breakdown of the Aussie gold. I've been eyeing some of the older Kangaroo designs for my Gold IRA here in Omaha, specifically anything pre-2000. For those of us looking to diversify beyond just the standard Eagles, how does the numismatic value of these older, rarer Kangaroo coins *truly* play out in the IRA landscape compared to their melt value? Is the premium for certified proofs worth the added cost if the goal is long-term asset preservation?

The Perth Mint Kangaroos are beautiful, no doubt, and hold their value, but honestly? After seeing the minting process on a factory tour back in '19 on a trip through Sydney, I'm less bullish on any major premium over spot for ANY modern bullion coin. They're churning these things out like hotcakes these days. Give me a pre-33 Saint-Gaudens or a circulated Mexican 50 Peso gold coin any day for true scarcity and historical value. You can find better bang for your buck than paying extra for a brand-new shiny object.

The Perth Mint's craftsmanship on the 1 oz. Kangaroo is genuinely unparalleled for a modern coin. I remember buying a tube of them back in 2018 when gold was hovering around $1250/oz; my local dealer here in Honolulu had a special. That investment alone has seen a 60%+ gain just from the spot price increase, not even counting the premiums which have held up incredibly well on those. It's truly a beautiful and reliable diversification piece.

@Brian Edwards – That's an interesting take on the Kangaroos, and I totally get the efficiency argument when you're looking purely at the metal value. However, for me, there's a different kind of value. Back in 2020, during the initial COVID chaos, I remember sitting in my home office here in Birmingham, watching the market rollercoaster. I had about 300k in my IRA, mostly in mutual funds, and I was just *nervous*. My financial advisor, bless his heart, suggested diversifying into physical gold. While he leaned towards Eagles, I ended up picking up a mix of Gold Kangaroos and some Canadian Maples. The premium on the Kangaroos was slightly higher than the Eagles at the time, but honestly, the design just spoke to me. There's something about that hopping kangaroo that feels distinctly *solid* and globally recognized, even if it's not the first thing a US dealer might reach for. It’s been a comfortable part of my portfolio, and when I look at those coins, it’s not just the gold I see, but the memory of navigating that crazy financial period.

Interesting read on the Kangaroos! I've held a fair amount of physical gold over the years, and while the Kangaroos are beautiful, I personally leaned more towards American Gold Eagles for my **gold IRA**. When I did my **401k rollover** about five years back, I spoke with a few advisors here in Boston and the consensus for my **retirement savings** was that the Eagles offered a bit more liquidity in the US market, especially with the premium I was getting at the time. Still, the Kangaroos are undeniably stunning **precious metals**, and their purity is top-notch – can't argue with that! The **tax advantages** of gold in an IRA were a huge draw for me, regardless of the specific coin type.

@Brian Edwards - Good point on the Gold Eagles. For core holdings, I'm with you. However, I've had good luck with Kangaroos for diversification, especially leveraging their annual design changes for potential numismatic uplift. About five years back, I snagged a few 1oz Kangaroos during a slight dip when spot was around $1300, and those unique designs have definitely held their own, even outperforming some of my Eagles when considering premiums on resale. It’s a niche approach, but worth looking into beyond just bullion value if you're holding long-term.

This is a great breakdown of the Kangaroos. I actually started my physical gold journey with a couple of these back in 2018. I remember picking up two 1oz coins from a dealer near Crabtree Valley Mall here in Raleigh. Paid just over spot, which felt like a steal at the time given how much I'd been reading about inflation eating into my 401k. The design on these is really sharp, and I appreciate that they change it yearly; adds a bit of a collector's appeal beyond just the intrinsic metal value. I've since diversified into Eagles and Maples, but those Kangaroos still hold a special place in my small, but growing, stack.

YES! This is exactly what I was looking for last year when I started diversifying! My financial advisor in Seattle kept pushing for more tech stocks, but my gut told me to look at physical assets. Ended up pulling the trigger on some Australian Kangaroos, and the peace of mind knowing a portion of my 401K is truly *mine* and not tied to some quarterly earnings report is priceless. Seriously, don't sleep on these.

Been looking into these as part of my new gold IRA setup. My financial advisor here in Miami suggested a mix of coins and bars, and the Kangaroos caught my eye, especially with the fluctuating premium. For those of you who've been at this longer, how much does that premium on something like a 1 oz Kangaroo typically impact your *overall* returns versus, say, a generic 1 oz bar, if you're holding for 5+ years? Just trying to wrap my head around whether the aesthetic and recognizability justify the extra upfront cost.

@Frank Rivera I hear you on the Perth Mint's quality – beautiful coins. I snagged a few tubes of those Kangaroos myself around that time, and they've been solid. For anyone diversifying into physical gold, I actually found this really helpful piece from Gainesville Coins comparing different bullion coins – it breaks down the pros and cons of Eagles, Maples, Kangaroos, etc., which was super useful when I was adding to my holdings last year. Definitely worth a read for anyone weighing their options.

@Frank Rivera That's an awesome grab! I’m in Boise and just started dipping my toes into gold IRAs this year, so I missed that sweet 2018 price point for the Kangaroos. I’ve been looking at some of the newer issues, and the detail really is something else. Do you ever worry about resale value if you've got tubes of the same coin, or is that less of a factor compared to the bullion price for these types?

Good read, especially for anyone just dipping their toes in. I’ve held a mix of Kangaroos and Eagles in my Gold IRA for the last five years, ever since I started moving a good chunk of my 401k over. When I was setting up my account through a broker in Boston, they really pitched American Eagles hard, but I ended up diversifying with about 20% in Kangaroos after reading up on their lower premiums and the Perth Mint’s reputation for quality. Seems like a solid strategy to balance things out, especially when you've got about $70k invested like I do from here in Providence.

This is a solid breakdown of the Kangaroo. I've been eyeing these as a potential diversification from my usual American Gold Eagles. For those of us holding larger amounts, say 200-300 ounces, have you found any significant differences in buy-back premiums or liquidity for these compared to the more common US/Canadian issues when you're looking to rebalance your portfolio? Some dealers in Richmond seem to prefer the Eagles, but I'm curious if that preference holds nationally.
