Finally pulled the trigger on a Gold IRA rollover last month from an old 401k. Been thinking about it for a while now, probably for the better part of 2-3 years, but with all the volatility lately it just felt like the right move. I'm a commodities guy – spent 30 years in steel down here in Birmingham. You learn pretty quick that physical assets hold real value when the market goes sideways.
My old 401k was sitting around $350k, mostly in various equity funds. Decided to roll over about $100k of that into physical gold. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward. I picked a custodian – did a lot of research on fees and storage options, which felt like the most critical part from what I read. Honestly, the paperwork was less of a headache than I expected, and the funds transferred over without a hitch. The hardest part was just making the final decision to pull the trigger.
Now, I’m not saying ditch everything and go 100% gold. diversification is still key, especially with a portfolio of my size. But having that physical hedge, something tangible that I understand the intrinsic value of, makes me sleep a lot better at night. Especially right now with all the talk about inflation and economic uncertainty. It feels like putting some of my eggs in a different, more stable, basket.
Anyone else here made a similar move recently? What were your considerations? Any tips on what to look out for down the road regarding distributions or rebalancing? Always interested to hear other folks' experiences.
