    🧱 Silver Bars

Custodian recs for physical silver bars?

    Key Takeaways
    • Mostly been in gold coins, like Eagles and Maples, but I'm thinking about diversifying a bit more into physical silver bars for the longer term.
    • I've got about half my portfolio in gold, around $150k worth right now, and I'm looking to put maybe another $30-50k into silver.
    • I'm talking actual physical delivery to an approved depository, not just paper silver.

Okay, so I've been in Gold IRAs for a while now – since after '08 when I saw what fiat currency could really do to your retirement if you weren't careful. Mostly been in gold coins, like Eagles and Maples, but I'm thinking about diversifying a bit more into physical silver bars for the longer term. I've got about half my portfolio in gold, around $150k worth right now, and I'm looking to put maybe another $30-50k into silver.

My current custodian has been fine for gold, but I've heard some chatter that certain custodians are better set up or have more competitive fees for storing larger, physical silver bars. I'm talking actual physical delivery to an approved depository, not just paper silver. I'm here in Phoenix, so ideally, a custodian with good, reliable storage options, maybe even with multiple locations that aren't all concentrated in one earthquake zone, would be a plus. I'm a retired teacher, so I'm not looking for anything too complicated, but definitely want a reputable company with a strong track record.

Anyone here have direct experience setting up a Silver IRA with physical bars? What custodians have you used and what were your experiences like? Were the fees reasonable? Any surprises in terms of storage costs or withdrawal procedures down the line? I'm trying to avoid any headaches when I eventually get to accessing these assets.

Any insights, positive or negative, would be greatly appreciated. Just trying to do my homework before I commit to anything new. Thanks!

Hey, I hear you on diversifying, especially with how things are looking these days. And silver definitely has its place.

That said, have you really crunched the numbers on silver bars for an IRA versus other options? The premium on bars can sometimes eat into those long-term gains, especially with storage fees. Just something to consider before you go all-in – sometimes keeping it simple with more gold or even some platinum might be a more efficient play when you factor in those costs.

Glad I'm not the only one who got into this after '08! Same here, realized I needed *something* tangible. I was mostly in gold too, but recently started adding some silver bars. Went with Augusta Precious Metals and so far so good. Their customer service has been pretty responsive for me, and the vaulting fees seem competitive enough. Good luck with your search!

Interesting! You've been in Gold IRAs for a while, so you've probably seen some things. When you say "physical silver bars," are you looking at specific sizes or types, like 100oz or kilo bars, or something else?
