I finally pulled the trigger on a Gold IRA a few months ago after staring at my regular 401k and wondering if it was really built to last through everything going on. Been in the music industry here in Nashville for 20 years, seen a lot of ups and downs, but this felt different. Got about $75k transferred over into physical gold, mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples. Felt good actually owning something tangible for a change.

My dealer set me up with STRATA Trust Company as the custodian, and so far, so good. No real complaints, but also haven't had much reason to interact with them beyond getting my initial statements. I’m thinking about rolling over a little more from an old 401k next year, maybe another $20k or so, and I wanted to see if I should stick with STRATA or if there are other custodians out there that offer a noticeably better experience.

What custodians are you all using for your Gold IRAs? Any horror stories or rave reviews? I know a lot of folks just go with whoever their dealer recommends, but I like to do my homework, especially with this kind of money. Thinking about diving deeper into all this and maybe trying that Gold IRA Quiz I saw advertised to make sure I'm not missing anything big. Any advice or shared experiences would be much appreciated!

Totally get this! I had a similar "aha!" moment with my old 401k a few years back. Ended up going with Equity Trust after a lot of research. They've been pretty solid for me so far, no complaints. Good luck with your search!

Hey, that's awesome you're getting into a Gold IRA! Quick question though - you mentioned being "in the music industry here in Nashville for 20 years," and that definitely sounds like a cool background. Did that experience influence your decision to go with a gold IRA at all, or was it purely financial considerations?

Appreciate you sharing your experience! It's always good to hear different perspectives on this. While I totally get the desire for diversification outside of traditional assets, I'm personally a bit skeptical about the long-term benefits of a Gold IRA specifically. The fees can really eat into those gains over time, and the storage aspect adds another layer of complexity that feels a bit... much, compared to just holding physical gold myself. To each their own, though!

Nice, good move getting that Gold IRA set up. Always smart to diversify, especially with how things are these days. When you’re looking at custodians, don't just compare fees. Make sure you're also checking their storage options and insurance coverage. Some custodians offer segregated storage (your gold is kept separate from others'), which can be a peace of mind thing even if it costs a tiny bit more.

Here's a decent article that breaks down some of the key things to look for in a custodian beyond just the basic fees: https://www.forbes.com/advisor/investing/ira-accounts/best-gold-ira-companies/

Totally agree man. That 401k anxiety is real. I felt the exact same way looking at my portfolio the last few years. Decided to diversify with some physical gold in an IRA last summer.

I ended up going with Equity Trust. They had good reviews, competitive fees, and the setup was pretty smooth. So far so good!
