Custodian hunt - any strong recommendations out there for a Gold IRA?

Alright, so I’m really diving hard into the Gold IRA space lately. Been looking at diversifying a good chunk of my portfolio, probably around 150k out of my current 200k, into precious metals. It's not just the stock market jitters; living down here in El Paso, you get a front-row seat to global economic and political shifts, and honestly, a hard asset just feels... safer. My business dealings across the border have taught me a thing or two about needing stability when things get squirrely.
I've been doing my due diligence on the ins and outs, but the custodian part is where I'm getting a little bogged down. There are so many out there, and the fees, storage options, and overall customer service seem to vary wildly. I’ve looked at Augusta Precious Metals and Goldco, they seem to be the big names, but I'm wondering if there are any hidden gems or smaller, more personalized custodians that people have had great experiences with. Is there anyone out there who feels like their custodian truly understands what they're trying to achieve, or are they all just glorified admin services?
Specifically, I'm looking for a custodian that is responsive and transparent with their fee structure. I'm not new to investing, but the self-directed IRA world can be a bit of a maze, and I don't want to get hit with unexpected charges. Also, what are people's thoughts on segregated vs. unsegregated storage? For a chunk of change like 150k, I’m leaning towards segregated for that extra peace of mind, even if it costs a bit more. Is that overthinking it, or a smart move?
Any and all personal experiences, good or bad, with specific custodians would be hugely appreciated. What did you like, what did you hate? What questions should I be asking that I haven't even thought of yet? Thanks in advance, this community has been a goldmine (pun intended, obviously) for information so far.
