    Key Takeaways
    • It’s part of my regular Q3 portfolio review, something I've done religiously since my days on the USS Enterprise.
    • I'm just curious what other folks are seeing out there, especially those with similar portfolio sizes.
    • My holdings are currently sitting just under the $2 million mark, mostly gold with a good chunk of silver allocated.

I've been going over my Gold IRA statements from Augusta Precious Metals and while I'm generally happy with their service and the precious metals I hold, I'm taking a closer look at the custodian fees charged by Equity Trust. It’s part of my regular Q3 portfolio review, something I've done religiously since my days on the USS Enterprise. I'm just curious what other folks are seeing out there, especially those with similar portfolio sizes. My holdings are currently sitting just under the $2 million mark, mostly gold with a good chunk of silver allocated.

Currently, I'm paying around $250 annually for custodian fees and another $100 for storage with Delaware Depository. It’s not breaking the bank, but every dollar counts, especially with current inflation. When I initially set this up about five years ago, the focus was squarely on securing my assets against market volatility, and frankly, the fee discussion felt secondary to getting the allocation right. But now, with a more mature portfolio, I'm wondering if there's any significant variance in these fees amongst the various custodians being used by others in a similar position.

Have any of you successfully negotiated lower fees with your custodian, or perhaps found a different custodian that offers more competitive rates without sacrificing security or service? I'm based out here in Virginia Beach, and while I wouldn't switch for the sake of a few bucks, if there's a substantial difference, it's certainly worth exploring. What are your annual custodian and storage costs looking like, and who are you using?

Hey, totally get wanting to dive into those custodian fees. They can definitely add up! One thing I found really helpful when comparing was asking for a total cost of ownership breakdown from a few different custodians, not just the annual fee. Some have hidden transaction fees or minimums that aren't immediately obvious. You might also find some good comparison tables on sites like Investopedia or even just by searching "Gold IRA custodian fee comparison." Sometimes seeing it all laid out helps put things in perspective. Good luck with the Q3 review!

Totally feel this. I was with American Hartford Gold for a while and had a similar experience with their custodian (Advanta IRA Trust). The metals themselves were great, but those custodian fees really started to add up the longer I held the account. It's definitely something you gotta keep an eye on annually. Good on you for doing regular reviews!

Totally get wanting to scrutinize those fees, especially as part of a regular review. Q3 already, wild.

You mentioned Equity Trust – I'm curious, are they your *only* option for a custodian with Augusta Precious Metals, or do they give you a choice?

Totally get wanting to scrutinize those fees, especially as part of a regular review. It's smart. But honestly, sometimes the "cheaper" fee isn't always the best deal in the long run. I've seen situations where a slightly higher fee comes with better customer service, more robust security, or a wider range of investment options that end up saving or making you more money down the line. Are you just looking at the raw number, or have you benchmarked the *value* you're getting for that fee compared to other custodians?

Yeah, I feel you on this. I'm with Augusta too, and while I've got no complaints about them either, those Equity Trust fees definitely get a second look every time.

I was curious, so I actually compared them to a few other custodians some friends use (like Strata and The Entrust Group), and honestly, Equity Trust's aren't wildly out of line. Slightly higher in some buckets, slightly lower in others, depending on the account size and transaction frequency. It seems to be the going rate for this kind of specialized service, unfortunately. Sucks, but it's part of the game I guess.

Honestly, I'm starting to think focusing so hard on the custodian fee percentage is a bit of a red herring, especially for those of us with portfolios under, say, $250k. I've seen more damage from chasing the absolute lowest storage fee only to get stuck with a custodian that charges exorbitant exchange fees or nickel-and-dimes you on liquidation. Better a slightly higher, but flat-rate, fee with transparent operations than saving $50 a year on storage just to get fleeced later.

Custodian fees are a killer when you're just starting, especially if you're not rolling over a massive 401k. I remember seeing some outfits charge like $200 a year just for basic storage and admin – felt like highway robbery on a $60k portfolio. That's why I started digging around here. Ended up going with Equity Trust after finding some good discussions on GIRAB; their fees are decent for my ~$80k gold/silver balance, and no complaints so far. Definitely pays to shop around and not just take the first quote.
