Alright, so I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about my silver IRA. Got a decent chunk in there, probably north of 600k now, mostly in 100oz bars. Been in the dairy business my whole life here in Madison, and retirement's getting closer every year. I'm a practical guy, always looking for efficiency, and these custodian fees are starting to gnaw at me a bit. I started this thing about 10 years ago and initially just went with whatever my guy recommended, but now I'm wondering if I'm leaving money on the table.
I'm looking at what I'm paying annually, and it just feels... high. I know there are storage costs and administrative stuff, but when you're talking about a portfolio of this size, even a small percentage point difference adds up to real money. Are there any hidden gems out there for custodians? Companies that offer better rates for larger accounts, or maybe some flat-fee structures that make more sense? I've mostly been focused on the metals themselves and the long-term play, especially after seeing how gold held up during some of these market swings. Speaking of which, if you haven't checked it out, the Gold vs Stocks Comparison tool is pretty eye-opening for seeing how gold stacks up over the long haul. That's a big reason I diversified into precious metals in the first place.
I'm wondering if anyone here has gone through the process of switching custodians for their silver or gold IRAs. Was it a headache? What were the main things you looked for? I'm not afraid of a bit of paperwork if it means saving a good chunk of cash over the next 10-15 years. Any recommendations for companies known for competitive fees, especially for silver bars, would be greatly appreciated. Any horror stories to avoid?
