I finally got around to consolidating an old 401k into a Gold IRA recently, about $75k from my previous job. I’m a government employee here in Albuquerque, and while the pension is nice, I really want some extra security for retirement, so the physical gold appeal was strong. The rollover process itself wasn’t too bad, surprisingly. What's bothering me now, though, are the custodian fees.
I went with a company that seemed reputable, but their annual fee structure feels a little… opaque. They quoted me a flat annual fee, but then there were also transaction fees for initial setup and warehousing and insurance that weren't totally clear upfront. It ended up being higher than I initially expected. I’m probably looking at around $250-$300 a year right now, which is a significant chunk of change for a portfolio this size.
Is that in line with what others are paying? I looked at a few other places before committing, and some had a percentage-based fee, while others had flat rates that seemed lower, but then I worried about hidden charges. For those of you who've gone through this, especially with a rollover around the $50k-$100k mark, what are your annual custodian fees looking like? Are there any specific custodians you’d recommend for being transparent and reasonable with their charges?
Feeling a bit of buyer's remorse on this specific point, but still happy with the decision to roll into gold. Just want to make sure I'm not getting hosed on the fees moving forward. Any advice or comparisons would be greatly appreciated!
