I've been looking over statements for my Gold IRA and honestly, the custodian fees are starting to make me scratch my head. When my late husband and I decided to diversify into precious metals, it felt like the right move, especially with everything going on in the world. He was always so meticulous with our finances, and I'm trying my best to keep up with his legacy, but some of this fine print is getting to me.
Our portfolio is just shy of $80k now, mostly in gold coins, and we went with a company that was highly recommended at the time. I'm seeing a flat annual fee, but then there are these "storage fees" and some other smaller charges that feel a bit opaque. Itβs not a huge amount, maybe a couple of hundred dollars a year in total, but it adds up, and I can't help but wonder if I'm leaving money on the table or if there's a more transparent option out there.
I live here in Raleigh, and while I chose a national custodian, I'm starting to think about whether a local company might offer something different, though I know most of these vaults are in Delaware or Salt Lake City anyway. Is it normal for custodians to have multiple types of fees like this? And how much is too much when it comes to these fees? I've seen some companies advertise "low fees" but then you dig in, and it's a hundred moving parts.
Have any of you changed custodians specifically because of fees? What should I be looking out for? Any specific questions I should be asking if I start reaching out to other companies? I just want to make sure I'm being a good steward of what we built together.
