Okay, so I’m trying to get a better handle on the long-term costs of my Gold IRA, and custodian fees are really sticking out. I went with Advantage Gold a few years back – like 2019 I think – when I finally pulled the trigger on converting some of my traditional IRA to a Roth and dedicating a chunk to physical gold. I've got around $180k in there now, so the fees definitely add up. I’m in Omaha and originally went with them because a buddy at work had a good experience, but I’m wondering if I left money on the table comparison shopping.
Currently, I’m paying a flat annual fee, which feels pretty standard, but I see some companies advertise percentage-based fees. For those of you with similar portfolio sizes (say, in the $100k-$250k range), are you seeing flat fees or percentage fees? And what are the actual numbers you're paying? My big concern is that if gold really takes off and my holdings grow significantly, a flat fee would be ideal, but if it stalls out, I might be overpaying compared to a percentage. It’s hard to tell what’s truly competitive and what’s just marketing speak.
Also, how often do you all actually check on your custodian fees? Is it something you revisit every few years or just set and forget? As an insurance agent, I’m all about understanding the fine print, but sometimes this stuff just feels intentionally opaque. Just trying to make sure I’m not throwing away good money. By the way, speaking of IRAs, has anyone here used that RMD Calculator on Gold IRA Blueprint? I’ve got a mix of retirement accounts and am already stressing about RMDs down the line for my traditional stuff, so curious if it’s helpful for forecasting.
