Man, I'm feeling a little bit ripped off with these custodian fees. I've got about $75k in my Gold IRA, mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples, and I swear the fees just keep sneaking up on me. I set this all up about 3 years ago when I started diversifying a bit from my farm holdings here in Fresno. Felt like a no-brainer to get into something real, tangible, especially with all the talk about inflation and whatnot. Now though, I'm just looking at these statements and wondering if I made the right call on the custodian.
When I first signed up, it was all about the "low introductory fees" and "competitive rates." Now it seems like every year there's some new administrative charge or a "storage adjustment" that just adds another few bucks to the bill. I know it's not a huge amount in isolation, but over time it adds up, and it feels like it's eating into my returns. I'm already dealing with enough overhead on the farm, this shouldn't feel like another hidden cost.
I guess I'm just curious what other folks are paying. I'm with GoldSafe Custodians (fictional name) right now, and their current annual fee for my level of assets is around $250, plus a transaction fee every time I buy or sell (which isn't often, but still). Is that pretty standard? Are there custodians out there that offer a better deal for someone with my portfolio size? I'm specifically talking about gold coins, not bars or anything because that's what's in my account.
Thinking about moving my account, but honestly, the thought of jumping through all those hoops again just makes my head spin. I remember setting this up the first time was already a pain in the butt. Has anyone here successfully transferred their Gold IRA to a different custodian specifically to lower fees? Was it worth the hassle? Any recommendations for custodians with transparent, flat-fee structures, or better yet, lower fees for gold coins? I'm all ears for some advice here.
