Custodian fees — feeling nickel and dimed, what are you

Okay, so I've been looking closer at my gold IRA custodian fees, and frankly, I'm a bit annoyed. I've got a little over $350k in physical gold in my IRA, all set up through a company my old FA recommended before I decided to specialize a bit more in precious metals investing myself. I’ve always just paid the annual fee without really scrutinizing it, figuring it was a cost of doing business. But now that I'm working with clients in Salt Lake City on their own gold IRAs, I'm realizing just how much these fees can vary and how much I might be overpaying.
My current custodian charges $225 annually for storage and admin combined. It feels like a flat fee based on some tier, but when I break it down, that's not insignificant, especially when your portfolio isn't actively trading. For perspective, for a $350k portfolio, that's roughly 0.064% of my assets. Some of the custodians I'm talking to for my clients are quoting closer to $150-175 for similar-sized portfolios, and a few even have tiered pricing that scales down nicely as the assets grow. It's making me wonder if I should switch custodians, but then there's the whole hassle of transferring assets, which I'm sure comes with its own set of fees and paperwork.
For those of you with significant holdings in your gold IRAs, what are you paying for custodian fees? Is it a flat fee, or percentage-based? And what are your thoughts on the value you're getting for those fees? Specifically curious if anyone here has gone through the process of transferring a gold IRA to a new custodian just to save on fees – was it worth the headache? Any recommendations for custodians that are transparent with their fee structure and offer competitive rates without sacrificing security or service?
