I've been deep diving into custodian fees lately for my Gold IRA, and honestly, the numbers I'm seeing are starting to chafe a bit. I've got a decent chunk, around $750k in precious metals right now, mostly American Gold Eagles and some South African Krugerrands. When I initially set this up about three years ago, I was so focused on getting the metals themselves and the market volatility I was trying to hedge against (looking at you, 2020), that the custodian fees felt like a minor line item. Now, looking at the annual statements, it feels like it's adding up.
My current custodian charges a flat annual fee plus a percentage of assets under custody. It's not huge in the grand scheme, maybe a few thousand a year, but when you're looking at protecting your wealth long-term, every dollar counts, right? I'm wondering if I'm just being overly sensitive to these fees, or if there are significantly better options out there. I know some offer tiered pricing, or perhaps scale back the percentage as your portfolio grows. I feel like with a portfolio my size, I should have some leverage here.
Has anyone here successfully negotiated lower custodian fees, or switched custodians specifically because of fees? Any recommendations for custodians with competitive fee structures, especially for larger accounts? I'm in Austin, and while most of this is done remotely, knowing a local contact could be a plus. Also, totally unrelated but something I used a while back that was super helpful: if you're just starting out or even reconsidering your options, check out the Eligibility Checker – it's a great tool to see if a Gold IRA even makes sense for your personal situation. Might save you some headaches down the road!
My main goal here is to ensure I'm not overpaying for a service that's pretty standard across the board. I'm obviously looking for a reputable company with solid security and service, but at what point do the fees become excessive? What are your annual custodian fees looking like, especially for portfolios in the $500k to $1M range? Am I missing some obvious fee-saving strategies here?
