Custodian Fees - Am I getting ripped off or is this normal?
- •Overall, it’s been a solid move.
- •I’m sitting on close to $700k in the account now, and honestly, the peace of mind having tangible assets outside of the market is worth a lot.
- •My current custodian charges me around $250 annually for storage and admin.
Okay, so I’ve been holding physical gold in my IRA for about 8 years now, rolled over a chunk of my old 401k when I started seeing the writing on the wall with the dot-com bubble (yeah, I’m that old). Overall, it’s been a solid move. I’m sitting on close to $700k in the account now, and honestly, the peace of mind having tangible assets outside of the market is worth a lot.
My logistics business here in Memphis is basically running itself now, planning to hand it off to my son-in-law in the next few years, so I’m really starting to drill down on every fee and expense lately. My current custodian charges me around $250 annually for storage and admin. It's lumped into one fee, which I appreciate for simplicity, but I never really shopped around after the initial setup. Is this still the going rate for an account my size? I’m seeing some places advertise lower, but then they hit you with separate storage fees, transaction fees, transfer fees… it gets confusing fast.
What are you all paying for your custodians? Looking for real numbers, not just "oh it's cheap." Are there any hidden fees I should be looking out for if I decide to switch? What’s been your experience with moving accounts? Honestly, I don't want to go through a huge hassle just to save fifty bucks, but if there's a significant difference or a better service out there, I'm all ears. TIA for any insights.
