Alright, so I’m really curious to hear about everyone’s experiences with their Gold IRA custodians. My current setup with Augusta Precious Metals has been… fine. No major complaints, but also nothing that's blown me away. Fees are reasonable, and the reporting is clear enough for my accountant, but I’m always open to seeing if there's something better out there. With my current gold allocation sitting around the $1.5M mark within the IRA, efficiency and bulletproof security are paramount. I’m thinking long-term here, probably another 10-15 years until I hit full RMDs, and the thought of having to deal with any hiccup then is a non-starter.
I know a lot of you guys on here are dealing with similar portfolio sizes, maybe even larger, so your insights would be invaluable. Have any of you switched custodians recently? What prompted the move? Were there any hidden fees or unexpected headaches during the transfer process? I’ve heard some horror stories about asset transfers getting bogged down, and honestly, the idea of having to chase down paperwork is less appealing than a Greenwich winter.
Specifically, if anyone has experience with custodians that truly excel in the high-net-worth space, focusing on gold coins (primarily Eagles and Buffalos for me), I'd love to hear it. I'm looking for something beyond just "they hold the gold". I want robust reporting, proactive communication, and frankly, a level of professionalism that aligns with what I'm used to in my hedge fund life. Also, for those nearing or already taking distributions, how's your custodian handling the RMD process? I've been playing around with the RMD Calculator on Gold IRA Blueprint and it's making me think more seriously about the eventual liquidation strategy. Any stories there, good or bad?
Thanks in advance for any recommendations or even just sharing what not to do. Really appreciate the collective wisdom here.
