Just wrapped up my 401k to Gold IRA rollover, and honestly, couldn't be happier with how it went. I’ve been eyeing this move for a while, especially with the market feeling like it’s teetering on the edge of a cliff lately. My 401k had a solid couple million in it, and while I keep a fair bit of my personal portfolio in physical gold anyway, I really wanted to diversify the retirement side of things. The actual process was surprisingly straightforward – far less red tape than I anticipated. Took about three weeks from start to finish to get the funds transferred and the metals allocated.
My biggest concern going into it was finding a custodian that was truly top-tier with a secure vaulting solution. After doing some serious due diligence, I went with Delaware Depository for storage, and the communication throughout the process with the precious metals dealer I chose was excellent. No pushy sales tactics, just clear information on bars vs. coins, premiums, and delivery options for the IRA. I allocated about 800k of the rollover into various gold bullion products – mostly American Gold Eagles and some PAMP Suisse bars. I keep the rest of my personal holdings in different formats, but for the IRA, I wanted recognized, liquid assets.
The only minor hiccup was a slight delay on the custodian's end getting the paperwork processed, but it was just a few extra days, nothing major. No real drama, which is a win in itself. It really puts my mind at ease knowing a substantial chunk of my retirement savings isn't entirely dependent on the whims of the stock market. With all the geopolitical uncertainty and the sheer amount of money being printed, it just feels like the smart play right now.
