Okay, so I've been doing some serious soul-searching about my retirement portfolio lately, especially with the current market volatility. My Gold IRA is sitting pretty at around $350k, which is great, but I'm always looking for smart diversification. I used to manage a bank branch here in Portland, and what I learned there hammered home the importance of not having all your eggs in one basket, even if that basket is solid gold.
I've been thinking a lot about platinum lately. Gold has had such a fantastic run, and I'm thrilled with my holdings, but there's this nagging feeling that platinum might be seriously undervalued right now. Historically, it often trades at a premium to gold, and seeing it where it is now just makes me wonder if there's a huge opportunity. I'm considering rolling over a portion of a smaller 401k (maybe $50k-$75k) into a Platinum IRA.
My concern, of course, is that platinum can be a bit more volatile due to its industrial demand. Auto catalysts are a big chunk of that, and with the whole EV shift, it adds a layer of complexity. But then again, hydrogen fuel cells use platinum too, and that's a growing sector. It feels like a high-risk, potentially high-reward play, which usually I'm a bit more cautious about, but something about the current price just whispers "buy."
Anyone else in a similar boat, or have experience adding platinum to their precious metals IRA? Am I overthinking the EV impact, or is the hydrogen economy enough to offset it and push prices higher? I’d love to hear some thoughts, especially from those who've been in the metals game longer than my current 8 years investing in gold.
