Alright, so I’ve been kicking this idea around for a while and I think it’s finally time to pull the trigger. Got a decent chunk of change sitting in a traditional IRA from my younger, dumber days (seriously, who thought tech stocks were always going to go up?). Building my construction business here in Chicago, I’ve always been a believer in stuff you can actually touch and see. Bricks, concrete, rebar – you get it. Same goes for my personal investments, which is why a Gold IRA is starting to look mighty attractive.
I'm probably looking to roll over somewhere between $250k and $500k into this thing, depending on how much cash flow I want to keep liquid for the next big project. I’ve done some preliminary reading, mainly about the tax advantages and the hedge against inflation, which really resonates with me given the current state of, well, everything. But the actual mechanics of doing it, that's where I'm a bit lost. What are the reputable providers everyone here uses? I'm not trying to get hosed on fees or end up with some shady operation. Any specific coins or bars you guys recommend to hold?
My biggest concern is really about the storage. I’m picturing some high-security vault, but how does that actually work? Do I get a receipt with a serial number for my specific gold? Is it allocated or unallocated storage? I'm used to knowing exactly where my assets are, whether it's a piece of land or a tractor. Don't want to just be another line item on some bank's spreadsheet if you catch my drift. Any war stories or cautionary tales about things to avoid would be super helpful too. Appreciate any and all advice from you seasoned precious metals pros.
