Been seeing a few threads pop up about people starting Silver IRAs, and it got me thinking about something I wrestled with early on: numismatic vs. bullion coins. As a lot of you know, I got into precious metals after the big crash in '08, and after a good career teaching here in Phoenix, it felt like a smart way to diversify my retirement savings. Started small, maybe around $50k back then, and it’s grown to a comfortable amount now, around $180kish, mostly in gold but I do have a decent chunk of silver too.

When I first set up my Gold IRA (and then added silver later), the company I worked with pitched me pretty hard on some numismatics, saying they had more "collectibility" and potential for upside beyond just the spot price. Sounded good in theory, right? Especially for someone who was a bit of a newbie and just learning the ropes. I did buy a few, but looking back, I'm genuinely not sure it was the best advice for my IRA. The premiums were definitely higher, and while they look nice, I'm not convinced they've appreciated much beyond the higher premium I paid.

Most of my silver now is Canadian Maple Leafs and American Silver Eagles – plain old bullion. The premiums are lower, and it just feels more straightforward. If I ever need to liquidate, I feel like those are much easier to sell at a price closer to spot. Is anyone here primarily holding numismatics in their IRA? What’s your experience been like, and do you feel like that "collectibility" factor has actually paid off for you in terms of investment performance?

I’m just curious if my experience is common, or if I perhaps just had bad luck with the specific numismatics I chose. For anyone starting out, it's definitely a decision to think about carefully. Do you prioritize the lower premiums and liquidity of bullion for an IRA, or do you think there's a strong case for numismatics after all?

Interesting discussion! While "safe and sound" is definitely appealing, I've always leaned a bit more towards the bullion side for an IRA. The premium on numismatic coins, even those with lower collectibility, can sometimes eat into your overall silver exposure, especially if the goal is purely capital preservation and growth based on the spot price. For a true long-term hold in an IRA, keeping those premiums low feels like a smarter play to me. Obviously, everyone's strategy is different, but for a retirement account, I'm all about maximizing the actual metal.

Oh man, this is a classic! I had the exact same internal debate when I started my Gold IRA. Ended up going with mostly bullion myself, just felt more straightforward for the IRA, you know? But I've definitely got a few numismatics in my personal stack. Curious to see what others chose for their IRAs!

Interesting point about the numismatics vs. bullion for Silver IRAs. I've always leaned towards bullion myself for the straightforward value, but you mentioned early on that you "wrestled with it."

Was there anything specific that ultimately pushed you towards one over the other, or was it just a general feeling about the market at the time?

Hey, great question! It's definitely something a lot of us ponder when setting up our precious metals IRAs. For anyone else trying to decide, a quick tip: make sure whatever you choose is actually IRA-eligible! Some really cool numismatic coins might not meet the fineness requirements, which can be a bummer.

The US Mint has a pretty clear list of eligible coins that's always good to double-check before making any big purchases. Just search "IRA eligible coins US Mint" – it'll save you some headaches down the line!

Totally agree with you on this. I went through the same debate when I started my Silver IRA a few years back. The whole "rarity" factor of numismatic coins sounded appealing at first, but every advisor I talked to emphasized the liquidity and straightforward pricing of bullion. Plus, the premiums on numismatics just seemed way too high for an investment vehicle. Stick with bullion for an IRA, folks, it's just simpler and less risky in the long run.
