I've been a pretty steady gold investor for years now, mostly through my Gold IRA, building up a decent chunk of change there. But lately, I've been really digging into silver and starting my own physical silver stacking journey. It feels like a smart move to diversify a bit beyond just gold, especially with everything going on in the world. I'm sitting on a portfolio somewhere in the low to mid six figures, and while the majority is still in gold, I've started dedicating about 10-15% of new investments to silver.
My strategy for silver is a bit different than my Gold IRA, which is more set-it-and-forget-it. For silver, I'm focusing on acquiring physical coins and bars. I've bought a mix of American Silver Eagles, Canadian Maples, and some generic 1oz and 10oz bars. I'm trying to stick to recognizable government-minted coins for the easy resale, but the generics offer a better premium per ounce. I usually place an order every couple of months, trying to dollar-cost average my way in rather than making one big purchase. I’m thinking about starting to look at some fractional silver too, just for the liquidity.
Living here in Tampa, I've got a couple of local coin shops I frequent, but honestly, I've had better luck with pricing and selection through online dealers. Premiums are definitely a thing, and it can be frustrating, but I just try to hunt for the best deals I can find. Storage is another aspect I've been really thinking about. For now, it's a mix of a home safe and a small safe deposit box. I'm constantly weighing the pros and cons of each – convenience vs. security. My main goal with silver is not just a hedge against inflation, but also to have it available in a more accessible form than my IRA.
I'm curious what strategies others are using for their silver stacking. Are you focusing on specific types of silver? How do you manage premiums, and where do you typically buy from? Also, for those who've been at this longer, what are your thoughts on fractional vs. larger bars in terms of future liquidity and value? Any tips for a relatively new, but dedicated, silver stacker?
