Best Gold IRA for smaller portfolios?

    Key Takeaways
    • My portfolio is north of a couple million, but for this specific move, I'm looking at a 100-200k allocation into a Gold IRA.
    • I've seen Augusta Precious Metals and Goldco mentioned a lot, but their marketing feels a bit...
    • aggressive for my taste.
    The 3-step rollover process explained

I've been managing my own personal allocation for a while now, primarily through physical and some GLD, but I'm seriously considering rolling over a portion of my traditional IRA into a self-directed Gold IRA. My portfolio is north of a couple million, but for this specific move, I'm looking at a 100-200k allocation into a Gold IRA. Problem is, most of the "top" lists I'm seeing online are clearly targeting multi-million dollar rollovers, or they're just shilling for companies with high minimums.

I'm Greenwich-based, so I'm not afraid of dealing with a real institution, but I'm also not trying to get hit with exorbitant fees for what effectively would be a smaller initial rollover, even if I plan to add to it over time. I've seen Augusta Precious Metals and Goldco mentioned a lot, but their marketing feels a bit... aggressive for my taste. I appreciate a good pitch, but I'd rather hear from folks who've actually gone through the process with a company that values a client doing a 100-200k transfer as much as they would a 500k one. Transparency on fees is huge for me too. I can model out returns with the best of them, but hidden costs are a complete non-starter.

Has anyone here had a good experience with a Gold IRA custodian for a similar allocation size? Are there any that specifically cater to "smaller" (I know, it's relative) investments without making you feel like a second-class citizen? I'm looking for solid customer service and security, obviously. Storage fees are a factor as well. Any specific recommendations or warnings would be super helpful. I'm trying to cut through the noise and get some genuine perspectives here.

Hey, cool you're looking into a Gold IRA! Just curious, when you say "smaller portfolios" in the title, but then mention your portfolio is "north of a couple million," are you thinking that's small in the context of a Gold IRA specifically, or just generally talking about the portion you'd move over?

Hey, I've been in a pretty similar boat! I also had some physical and GLD exposure, and eventually decided to do a partial rollover of a traditional IRA into a gold IRA. My portfolio size is smaller than yours, but I was worried about minimums too. Ended up going with Augusta Precious Metals and they were pretty good about explaining everything and not pushing for a huge initial investment. Might be worth checking them out.

Honestly, with a "couple million" in your portfolio, I wouldn't really consider that a "smaller portfolio" for a Gold IRA. Most people asking about small portfolios are talking about under 50k, maybe 100k at the absolute max. You're likely in a different league for fees and options.
