Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger on rolling over part of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I'm a government employee here in Albuquerque, and I've been wanting to diversify beyond my pension for a while, especially with all the market volatility lately. I put about $75k into it – not my whole 401k, but a good chunk I felt comfortable with. The paperwork was all submitted about three weeks ago, and I was told to expect the whole thing to be finalized and the gold rounds to be in the depository within 2-3 weeks. Well, we're at the three-week mark, and it still feels like it's moving at a snail's pace.

I understand there are processes involved, and I'm not expecting instant gratification, but I'm getting a little antsy. My advisor says everything is "in process" but can't give me a firm date. Is this typical? Has anyone gone through a 401k to Gold IRA transfer recently and can share their timeline? Did it actually take longer than the initial estimate?

Mentally, I'm trying to figure out if I just need to be more patient or if there's something I should be pushing on. I used that Tax Calculator tool a bunch when I was deciding how much to roll over, which was super helpful for understanding the tax implications, but it obviously doesn't help with transfer speed! It just makes me want to see the new asset allocation even more. For those who've done it, what was your experience with the transfer timeline from initial contact to the gold actually being secured in the depository? Any significant delays?

Hey, totally feel you on the transfer drag. I've been looking into this too. You mentioned being a government employee in Albuquerque – does that mean your 401k was a TSP (Thrift Savings Plan) or something else? Just wondering if that might be playing a role in the speed, since I know TSP rollovers can have their own quirks.

Ugh, I feel this in my soul. I did a similar rollover from an old 401k to a Gold IRA last year and it felt like it took forever! I was checking my account like three times a day. Mine eventually went through, but I swear it felt like glacial speed. Hope yours speeds up soon!

That's a bummer it's taking so long! While I totally get wanting to diversify, especially with your pension, I've heard mixed things about Gold IRA transfers being *that* much faster, even in good circumstances. Sometimes the "fast" promises from these companies are a bit optimistic, and the actual custodian or trustee handling the old 401k paperwork can be the real bottleneck. Hope it speeds up for you soon!

Hey, I hear you! Transfers can definitely feel like they're crawling when you're excited to get things done. One thing that sometimes speeds things up is making sure you have *everything* filled out perfectly the first time – even a tiny missing initial or date can kick it back. It might be worth a quick double-check on all your paperwork if you haven't already.

Also, if you haven't already, check out this quick Google search for "average gold IRA transfer times." It can give you a better idea of what's typical and whether your current timeline is outside the usual range. Sometimes just knowing the average helps manage expectations. Hope it finishes up for you soon!

Totally feel this! I did a rollover last year, about ~$60k from an old company 401k, and it felt like it took forever. From the first call to actually seeing the gold in the vault records (I went with segregated storage), it was nearly 6 weeks. My contact at the gold company was super helpful, but the old 401k custodian was definitely the bottleneck. Hope yours speeds up soon!
