Anyone in here have experience with STRATA Trust Company for their custodian?

    Key Takeaways
    • Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger on getting a Gold IRA set up a few months ago.
    • I went with Augusta Precious Metals for the dealer (they were super helpful, though a bit pricier than some others I looked at).
    • They recommended STRATA Trust Company as the custodian, and that’s who I’ve been using since.
    The 3-step rollover process explained

Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger on getting a Gold IRA set up a few months ago. Like a lot of folks probably did, I decided after hearing all the chatter on the news about inflation and the usual market volatility that I wanted to diversify my retirement a bit more. Being in the music industry here in Nashville, you see firsthand how quickly things can change, and honestly, after putting a decent chunk of my 401k (around $60k of it) into physical gold, I’m feeling a lot more secure about my future.

I went with Augusta Precious Metals for the dealer (they were super helpful, though a bit pricier than some others I looked at). They recommended STRATA Trust Company as the custodian, and that’s who I’ve been using since. So far, everything’s been pretty smooth sailing. They got the account opened quickly, the transfers went through without a hitch, and I’ve received all the statements on time. Their online portal is... functional. Not super fancy, but it gets the job done for viewing my holdings and statements. I haven't actually needed to call them for anything complex yet, which I guess is a good thing.

My question is, does anyone here have long-term experience with STRATA? Or even better, does anyone have other custodian recommendations they've loved? Especially interested if you're holding gold rounds like I am. I’m thinking ahead to RMDs eventually (yeah, I know, still a ways off for me, but it'll happen!), and I want to make sure I’m with a custodian that’s efficient and transparent when it comes to distributions, selling, whatever. Are there any common pitfalls folks have run into with custodians that I should be aware of?

Basically, I want to make sure I’m set up for success in the long run. Are there any red flags I should be looking for down the line with STRATA, or am I overthinking it? Any insights or personal anecdotes would be hugely appreciated!

Oh hey, yeah, I actually went with STRATA for my Gold IRA as well! Pretty similar situation, saw the writing on the wall with inflation and figured it was time to move some retirement funds into something more tangible. So far, so good. No complaints from my end, the process was pretty smooth sailing. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who felt that push toward precious metals lately!

Hey, congrats on getting your Gold IRA set up! Quick question: did you choose STRATA yourself, or was that who your precious metals dealer recommended you go with?

Hey, glad you're looking into diversifying! While Strata is a decent option, I've heard a few rumblings about their fee structure being a bit less transparent than some other custodians, especially for smaller accounts or less common assets within a self-directed IRA. Might be worth taking a closer look at that if you haven't already, just to make sure there are no surprises down the line.
