Been a while since I posted, but I've got a question weighing on me about these 401k to Gold IRA transfers. My old military 401k is sitting there, and after seeing the inflation numbers and frankly, some of the geopolitical rumblings out here in the Pacific (you don't live in Hawaii long without keeping an eye on things), I really want to get a good chunk of it into precious metals. I'm looking at rolling over about half of it, probably around the $350k mark, into a Gold IRA.

I've been talking to a few different companies, and the one thing they all seem to dance around a bit is the actual timeline. Some say a few weeks, others say it "depends." I'm a planner, always have been, and this vagueness is driving me a little nuts. I understand there are several steps involved – getting the funds released from old custodian, getting them to the new one, then actually buying the metals and getting them to the depository. But what's a realistic expectation?

Anyone here gone through this recently with a significant sum? How long did it actually take from the moment you initiated the rollover request to when your metals (or at least proof of ownership) were securely in a depository? I’m envisioning a smooth transition, but I also remember how long some military paperwork can take, and that's making me a little antsy about having that much money in limbo. Any insights or war stories (good or bad) would be much appreciated. Cheers from Honolulu!

Ugh, same here! I just started the process for my old 403b and every email about "next steps" feels like a test of my patience. The waiting game is definitely the hardest part, especially when you're just trying to get your money into something more stable. Good luck with yours!

Hey, totally get the stress on timelines. It's wild out there. Quick question for you: when you say "old military 401k," do you mean a TSP? Just curious if that adds any extra wrinkles to the transfer process compared to a regular employer-sponsored plan. Good luck with the move!

Hey, I hear you on the stress. It's easy to get caught up in the urgency, especially with all the noise out there. But honestly, for most people, a few extra weeks in the transfer process isn't going to make or break their long-term financial security. Gold isn't *that* volatile day-to-day.

Focus on getting it done right, making sure you understand the fees and storage, rather than just rushing it. Sometimes slow and steady really does win the race when it comes to these big financial moves. Good luck with the transfer!

Oh man, I totally understand the stress! Those timelines can feel like an eternity, especially when you're watching the market. One thing that really helped me with my transfer (also from an old 401k) was to make sure I had everything squared away on the 401k side *before* even initiating the Gold IRA rollover. Sometimes, the hold-up isn't the new custodian, but slow responses from the old one.

Also, if you haven't already, check out the IRS guidelines on rollovers. They have some pretty clear rules on direct vs. indirect rollovers and the timelines involved, which can help you understand what's normal and what might be a delay. Good luck, hope it goes smoothly for you!
