Anyone else seeing better custodian services lately, or is it just me?

Been in the gold game for about 15 years now, started really digging into it after the '08 crash. Most of that time, the custodian part of the Gold IRA experience felt like a necessary evil, you know? Just a hoops-to-jump-through kind of thing. Got a decent chunk in there, somewhere between $500k-$1M, mostly in coins now, after shifting out of some of the bulkier bar holdings a few years back. For the longest time, I figured a custodian was pretty much a commodity – they all did the same thing, just some charged more. But lately, I’ve been wondering if things are changing.
My current setup, which I won't name explicitly here to keep it neutral, has been… adequate. Not bad, not great. The usual fees, the usual paperwork. But in the last year or so, I've had a couple of interactions where I actually felt like they were trying to be helpful rather than just process transactions. Maybe it's just my specific rep, or maybe the industry is finally realizing that a little customer service goes a long way, especially when you're talking about folks with significant assets tied up.
I’m based out of Dallas, been in the oil industry my whole career, so I appreciate efficiency and straight talk. I've heard some horror stories from buddies over the years about custodians making rollovers a nightmare or holding up distributions. Thankfully, I haven't had anything like that, but it always keeps me slightly on edge. Are any of you guys seeing improvements from your custodians? Or has anyone recently switched and found a truly stellar experience they'd recommend?
I’m not actively looking to switch, but I’m always open to hearing about a better mousetrap, especially if it means less hassle and potentially lower fees without sacrificing security. What’s your experience been like, particularly for those with larger portfolios or anyone dealing with more frequent rebalancing?
