Anyone Else Frustrated with Gold IRA Custodians? Looking for Better Options.

Okay, so I’ve been holding a pretty significant chunk of my retirement in physical gold through an IRA for a while now, roughly $800k-$1M of my overall portfolio. I started this journey shortly after I retired from the energy sector here in Houston, maybe 8-9 years ago. My current custodian has just been... lackluster, to put it mildly. Communication is slow, fees feel arbitrary sometimes, and frankly, I don't always feel like they're looking out for my best interest beyond just holding onto my gold. It's gotten to the point where I'm seriously considering a transfer. Anyone else had similar experiences?
I’m looking for recommendations for custodians that really shine. What I care about most is transparency in fees – no hidden charges. I also want a responsive team, people who can actually answer my questions knowledgeably and quickly. Security is obviously paramount, but beyond that, it’s the day-to-day service that’s bugging me. My current setup just feels like an automated system with human interaction only if I really push for it. Is that just the norm, or are there better operations out there?
For those of you with substantial gold IRAs, what’s been your experience? Are there custodians you’ve worked with that you’d wholeheartedly recommend? What specific features or services made them stand out? I’m particularly interested if anyone has moved an IRA and found the process smooth. And on a related note, as I’m approaching the RMD phase for some of my other accounts, I stumbled across this RMD Calculator at Gold IRA Blueprint which actually seems pretty useful for figuring out those required minimum distributions. Has anyone used this or a similar tool to help strategize their gold IRA withdrawals, especially with different custodians?
I’ve heard good things about some of the bigger players, but I’m wary of just jumping to another large company without hearing real-world feedback. Is bigger necessarily better here, or are there niche custodians that offer a more personalized touch? It's a big decision, and with the amount of wealth I have tied up in gold, I’d appreciate any insights you all can share. Thanks in advance for any advice!
