Anyone else eyeing platinum right now? Thinking it's due for a comeback.

    Key Takeaways
    • Most of my 75k is in gold, but I did dabble a little in silver early on.
    • Now, though, I'm starting to think about diversifying a bit within the precious metals space, and platinum keeps popping into my head.
    • I remember back in the day, platinum was often more expensive than gold, but that's certainly not the case anymore.

I've been looking at my Gold IRA statements lately, and of course, gold's been doing its thing – keeping me feeling secure, which is why I got into it in the first place a few years back. Most of my 75k is in gold, but I did dabble a little in silver early on. Now, though, I'm starting to think about diversifying a bit within the precious metals space, and platinum keeps popping into my head.

I remember back in the day, platinum was often more expensive than gold, but that's certainly not the case anymore. It's been pretty flat for a while, and honestly, the industrial demand for it still seems strong, especially with the push for cleaner emissions (catalytic converters, etc.). As a mayor here in Boise, I'm always thinking about long-term value and community resilience, and it makes me wonder if platinum is just being overlooked right now. It feels like it's trading at a significant discount compared to its historical averages relative to gold.

My concern, naturally, is the whole EV transition. Will that seriously dent demand in the long run? Or will new industrial uses emerge? For my portfolio, I'm not looking to dump my gold by any means, but I'm considering maybe shifting 5-10k of my gains from gold and into platinum. It feels like a calculated risk with a potentially big upside. Anyone else in a similar boat, or have you already made a move into platinum? What are your thoughts on its future in an IRA?

Interesting thought on platinum. While I get the appeal of a "comeback" and diversifying beyond just gold and silver, I'm a bit more cautious on platinum for a Gold IRA. Its industrial demand component makes it a bit more susceptible to economic downturns than gold, which is usually seen as a pure safe-haven.

I mean, if you're looking for security and wealth preservation, gold and silver generally have a more established track record for that specific purpose within an IRA. Platinum definitely has its moments, but for long-term retirement savings, I personally lean towards the more traditional precious metals.

Totally! I've been having similar thoughts. My portfolio is mostly gold, but I dipped my toes into silver a while back when it looked undervalued and it's done pretty well. Now I'm eyeing platinum for the same reason. Feels like there's some serious upside potential there. Glad I'm not the only one!

Interesting thought! When you say "due for a comeback," are you thinking more short-term speculation or a longer-term trend you've spotted? Curious about your reasoning.

Platinum's definitely an interesting one! It's been pretty volatile, but that could mean some serious upside if it does turn around. One thing to keep in mind, though, especially with a Gold IRA, is that the IRS has specific rules about which types of platinum bullion and coins are allowed in an IRA. Gotta make sure whatever you're looking at meets those fineness and purity standards. Good luck!
