Anyone doing home storage for their Gold IRA?
- •I've been looking into rolling over more of my retirement funds into gold, probably another $50k or so, and the question of storage keeps coming up.
- •Right now my existing gold IRA, which is around $150k, is all in a secure depository.
- •It's fine, I guess, but I've been hearing more and more chatter about home storage options for IRAs, specifically the "checkbook IRA" setup.

My business here in Savannah, mainly tourism-based, has seen its share of ups and downs over the years. You get a hurricane scare, business slows down. Economy dips, fewer visitors. It makes you really appreciate having assets you can physically touch if things go sideways. And honestly, the idea of having a portion of my gold a little more accessible is pretty appealing. Not that I'm planning on digging it up from under the magnolia tree, but you get what I mean.
For those of you who've gone the home storage route, what's your experience been like? Is it as much of a headache with compliance as some people make it out to be? I've seen some companies offering these "self-storage" solutions, but I'm wary of anything that sounds too good to be true, especially when the IRS is involved. What are the real watch-outs? Are the fees for setting it up astronomical, or is it offset by not paying yearly depository fees?
And for those still using a depository, what keeps you there? Is it pure peace of mind, or have you just not found a compelling reason to switch? I'm trying to weigh the potential benefits of direct access against the regulatory hoops and the implied security of a professional vault. Would love to hear some real-world experiences from people who've navigated this decision.
