Okay, so I'm just getting started with my Gold IRA, literally opened it last month. I've been doing a ton of research, trying to wrap my head around everything, and now I'm stuck on this Eagles vs. Buffalos debate. I'm a teacher here in Columbus, so my budget isn't exactly unlimited, but I managed to roll over about $15k from an old 403b, and I'm adding a little bit each month. This is all new territory for me!
I understand the basic differences – the Eagles are 22k with that copper/silver alloy, and the Buffalos are pure 24k. I've read that the premium on Eagles can sometimes be a bit lower, but then others say the purity of the Buffalo makes it a better long-term hold. My main goal here is wealth preservation and a little bit of diversification away from the stock market. I'm not looking to become a gold baron overnight, just protect some of my hard-earned savings.
For someone in my situation, with a relatively small starting portfolio (hoping to get it up to $25k-30k within the next couple of years), does it really make a huge difference which one I go with? Is the slightly lower purity of the Eagle something I should be concerned about for a Gold IRA, or is the fact that it's government-backed enough? And vice versa for the Buffalo – is the extra premium worth it for the 24k status? I'm finding so many conflicting opinions out there!
Any advice from folks who've been through this decision-making process would be amazing. What did you choose and why? Did you regret your decision later? Are there any other factors I should be considering that I haven't even thought of yet as a total beginner?
