American Eagles vs Buffalos for a Silver IRA - What are you all doing?

    Key Takeaways
    • •Buffalos once I get serious about looking at actual coins.
    • •My Gold IRA is sitting around $180k right now, mostly Eagles (which I love), and a smaller chunk of some Perth Mint stuff.
    • •For silver, I'm really torn.
    The 3-step rollover process explained

I've been kicking around the idea of adding some silver to my Gold IRA for a while now, maybe 10-15% of my total metals, and I keep hitting this wall on American Eagles vs. Buffalos once I get serious about looking at actual coins. My Gold IRA is sitting around $180k right now, mostly Eagles (which I love), and a smaller chunk of some Perth Mint stuff. Work for an oil company here in Tulsa, and honestly, listening to our execs talk about inflation and economic uncertainty was a huge kick in the pants to diversify into precious metals years ago.

For silver, I'm really torn. The Eagles are, well, Eagles. They're recognized, have that government backing, and they just feel "right" because a lot of my gold is in them. But then you look at the Buffaloes, and their premium is usually a bit lower, which is appealing when you're talking about taking a nice chunk like $20-25k out of other investments. I know for gold, Eagles often carry a slightly higher premium due to their popularity and minting costs, but is it the same for silver to the point where it overshadows the potential resale ease of the Eagle?

My main goal here is long-term wealth preservation and a hedge against the kind of goofy stuff we're seeing in the market. Liquidity is important, but I'm not planning on selling these next year. I'm thinking 10-15 years down the line, minimum. So, for those of you with Silver IRAs, what did you go with and why? Did the premium play a huge role? Or was it more about brand recognition or potential future demand?

I’m still figuring out the silver side of things for an IRA. If anyone is just starting out like I was a few years ago with gold, I highly recommend checking out the free Gold IRA Quiz. It was super helpful for me when I was first weighing all the options for my Gold IRA and trying to understand everything from eligible metals to custodian fees. Anyway, back to the Eagles vs. Buffalos – thoughts?

Honestly, I hear you on the Eagles vs. Buffalos dilemma for a silver IRA. Most people seem to lean heavily into one or the other for various reasons.

However, have you considered mixing it up a bit? A 50/50 split gives you some diversification in terms of potential future premiums and market demand, plus you get to enjoy both designs. Just a thought!

I hear you on this! I went through the exact same thing when I was setting up my Precious Metals IRA. I ended up going with Eagles for my silver, mostly because my dealer had a slightly better premium on them at the time, and I figured the recognition factor might be a tiny bit higher if I ever needed to liquidate quickly. No regrets so far, but I kinda wish I'd grabbed a few Buffalos just for the variety.

Hey, I've been wrestling with a similar decision. When you say you keep hitting a "wall" on Eagles vs. Buffalos, could you elaborate a bit more on what specific concerns or considerations are causing that hesitation for you?

Hey, cool you're looking into diversifying with silver! Both Eagles and Buffalos are solid choices for an IRA. One thing to keep in mind, especially for IRAs, is the premium. Sometimes certain dealers will have specials on one over the other, or offer lower premiums for larger quantities. It can be worth checking a few different respected dealers to see if there's a better deal to be had before you pull the trigger. Good luck!
