Added Silver to my Gold IRA - Thoughts on diversification
- •Finally pulled the trigger and diversified my Gold IRA with some silver.
- •I ended up converting about $50k of cash into some American Silver Eagles and Silver Maple Leafs and transferred them directly into the IRA.
- •The premium on silver over spot is definitely higher than gold right now, which stings a bit, but I'm looking at this as a long-term play.
Finally pulled the trigger and diversified my Gold IRA with some silver. Been sitting on a decent stack of gold for a while now, mostly a mix of American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maples that I rolled over from an old 401k a few years back. The bulk of my portfolio is still in tech stocks, and while that's been good to me, the market volatility lately even out here in SF has me feeling a bit twitchy. I'm late 40s, so thinking more about wealth preservation than aggressive growth at this point, and that quarter-million-dollar gold position felt a bit concentrated.
My initial thought was just to add more gold, maybe some smaller fractional coins for liquidity, but after talking to a few advisors and doing some of my own research, adding silver felt like a smart move. I ended up converting about $50k of cash into some American Silver Eagles and Silver Maple Leafs and transferred them directly into the IRA. The premium on silver over spot is definitely higher than gold right now, which stings a bit, but I'm looking at this as a long-term play. The industrial demand for silver, especially with all the new energy initiatives, seems like a strong intrinsic driver in addition to its monetary metal status.
Anyone else here diversified their precious metals IRA beyond just gold? Did you stick to coins, or did you go for bars? I'm curious about the long-term outlook for the gold-to-silver ratio. It feels high right now, which was part of my rationale for adding silver – potential catch-up if that ratio normalizes. Or am I just overthinking it and should have just bought more gold? Genuinely curious to hear other people's strategies and feelings on including silver in what's effectively a "Gold IRA."
