Finally pulled the trigger and diversified my precious metals a bit. Up until now, my IRA has been 100% gold. Mostly coins – Eagles, a handful of Maple Leafs, some Krugerrands. Figured it was time to add some silver to the mix. Didn't go crazy, maybe 15-20% of my total metals allocation in silver now. Got a good chunk of Silver Eagles, a monster box worth actually, and a few bars. My advisor at Lear Capital recommended it, and after doing my own digging, it made sense. Gold for the long-term stability, silver for the industrial demand angle and maybe a bit more upside if things get really wild.
I’ve been in the dairy industry my whole life, seen commodities go up and down more times than I can count. Gold has always felt like the ultimate safety net, a real tangible asset you can hold onto. But silver, it's just so damn useful. Every piece of tech, every solar panel... it needs silver. That practical side of me, the one that’s been milking cows since before half you folks were born, just likes that idea. It’s got a real-world utility that gold, while valuable, doesn't quite match in the same way.
My overall portfolio is sitting somewhere in the mid-to-high six figures, maybe $800k or so, and about $250k of that was in gold. Now I've rebalanced a bit to get that silver exposure. Took some profits from other investments that had done well over the past couple of years to fund it, didn't dip into my emergency cash. Living here in Madison, WI, you learn a thing or two about practical investments and planning for the long haul. Anyone else here diversify their metals beyond just gold in their IRA? What was your reasoning? And for those who have silver, what are your favorite forms to hold?
