Hard to believe it's been five years since I first opened my Gold IRA. Time flies when you're... well, watching the market do its thing. Back in late 2018, I decided to pull the trigger and roll over a portion of my 401k into physical gold. Best move I've made for my retirement portfolio, honestly. I was looking at around a $750k portfolio at that point, seeing the writing on the wall with market volatility, and just wanted some real tangible hedge. The thought of all my eggs in one basket, especially with tech stocks, was keeping me up at night here in Austin.
My initial allocation was about $200k into gold – a mix of American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maple Leafs. I liked the idea of holding something physical that wasn't tied directly to the whims of the stock market. Over the past five years, that original $200k has grown pretty nicely, currently sitting around $280k. That's a roughly 40% gain, or about 7% annually. Not astronomical, but incredibly solid, especially when you consider what some other sectors have done over the same period. More importantly, it provided a real anchor when things got choppy. I remember watching the initial COVID crash and while my tech holdings got hammered, my gold was holding steady, even climbing. That feeling of security was almost worth more than the monetary gains.
I've actually added to it a couple of times since, mostly during market dips where I felt gold was undervalued relative to other assets. I'm now pushing close to $350k in my Gold IRA. The main thing I've learned is the importance of diversification, especially for us entrepreneurs who tend to be over-exposed to our own ventures or specific sectors. This isn't about getting rich overnight; it's about preserving wealth and having a strong foundation when everything else feels like it's on shaky ground.
For those of you thinking about it, what are your biggest concerns? Fees were a concern for me initially, but I found a reputable custodian with reasonable annual costs. Anyone else out there with a longer or shorter Gold IRA journey? I’m curious to hear about others' experiences, especially with different types of precious metals or strategies. Did I miss anything massive?
