    • Just hit the five-year mark with my Gold IRA, and honestly, feeling pretty solid about it.
    • I rolled over about 15% of my 401k – roughly $150k back then – into a self-directed IRA and went with physical gold.

Just hit the five-year mark with my Gold IRA, and honestly, feeling pretty solid about it. I rolled over about 15% of my 401k – roughly $150k back then – into a self-directed IRA and went with physical gold. As a doctor here in Boston, my portfolio is pretty diversified already, but I wanted that extra hedge against inflation and market volatility. The whole rollover process was smoother than I expected, though admittedly, the paperwork was a bit of a beast.

My initial thought was largely about wealth preservation, especially with all the talk about quantitative easing and potential currency debasement. I wasn't necessarily chasing huge gains, but more just trying to sleep better at night knowing a portion of my retirement wasn't entirely tied to the stock market's whims. The last five years have certainly shown some interesting swings in the gold market. There have been times when I questioned if it was the right move, but seeing how things are playing out globally, I’m increasingly convinced.

Looking at the overall returns, it's definitely added a nice stability to my total portfolio. It hasn't always outperformed my tech stocks, obviously, but it hasn't crashed when other sectors have. The peace of mind alone has been worth it. I'm curious to hear from others who've been in their Gold IRAs for around the same timeframe – how are you feeling about your returns and the decision now? Anyone looking to rebalance or add more?

I hear you on that. Rolled over most of my old 401k into a Gold IRA about 6 years back, right as I was moving out to Scottsdale. Plenty of folks called me crazy then, but seeing my portfolio now compared to what those tech stocks did to my pals… The Gold vs Stocks 10-year comparison on GIRAB really puts things in perspective. It's not about getting rich overnight, it's about preserving wealth, plain and simple.

Hey, that's awesome to hear! I had a similar experience, though on a much smaller scale. Rolled over an old 401k into a Gold IRA about 3 years ago and it’s been a nice steady part of my portfolio. Definitely sleep better knowing I have some exposure outside the traditional market. Sounds like you made a smart move!

Hey, that's awesome to hear about your Gold IRA! Good to know it's working out for you.

You mentioned you went with physical gold – was that mostly coins, bars, or a mix of both?

Hey, that's awesome you're feeling good about your Gold IRA! Diversification is definitely key, especially with a solid portfolio like yours.

I do wonder, though, if you've done any "what if" scenarios given the market's performance over the last five years? While gold has held its own, I can't help but think about the growth some other assets (even within a diversified portfolio) have seen in that timeframe. Just a thought!

Glad it's working out for you! I'm five years in myself, and while the peace of mind is definitely there, I sometimes wonder if I over-allocated back in '19. Saw a pretty decent run in some of my other non-retirement assets during the same period. Anyone else feel like they might have played it a little too safe with a high gold percentage, or is the stability just worth more than chasing those bigger gains?
