5 years into my Gold IRA and honestly, it's been a ride

Hard to believe it's been five years already since I first diversified into a Gold IRA. As a construction guy, I've always been about tangible assets – something you can actually feel and see. Paper money and digital numbers just don't hit the same way, especially with all the economic weirdness going on. I started looking into it pretty seriously back when I first hit around a quarter-million in my broader investment portfolio, wanting some real ballast.
My initial investment into precious metals within the IRA was about $70k, mostly in bullion coins – American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maple Leafs. I've been DCAing into it ever since, nothing massive, usually a few thousand here and there when the market dips or I just have extra cash flow from a good quarter at the company. I'm sitting right around $120k in my Gold IRA piece of the pie now, not including other investments. I know some folks just park it and forget it, but I genuinely enjoy watching the movements, even if it's not the rapid-fire trading like stocks. It’s a different kind of satisfaction.
The returns haven't been "get rich quick" obviously, but that was never the goal. What I've seen is stability and a consistent upward trend, especially against inflation. There’s a certain peace of mind knowing that a solid chunk of my wealth isn't just evaporating with every new government spending bill or economic uncertainty. I'm not going to throw out exact percentages because frankly, it varies depending on when you bought in, but anyone keeping an eye on gold over the last five years knows it's performed damn well. It's done exactly what I wanted it to do – protect purchasing power and act as a hedge.
I'm curious to hear from others who've been in Gold IRAs for a similar or longer timeframe. What kind of growth have you seen? Any regrets or things you’d do differently? And for those just starting, what weighed most heavily on your decision? Always interested in hearing different perspectives from folks who dig into this stuff.
