5 years into my Gold IRA and feeling pretty good about it (Gold Rounds specific!)

Just hit the 5-year mark on my Gold IRA, and wanted to share my experience, especially since I focused pretty heavily on gold rounds. When I first started this back in 2019, I was a bit apprehensive, honestly. As a doctor here in Boston, my portfolio is generally pretty diversified, and throwing a chunk of my retirement – about 10% of my total 800k at the time – into physical gold felt like a big leap. But with all the market volatility and inflation fears brewing, I wanted that tangible hedge.
My initial investment into the Gold IRA was around $80,000, and I primarily went with 1 oz American Gold Eagle rounds. I liked the recognition and liquidity, even though I knew premiums could be a bit higher. Over these five years, I've seen some pretty decent appreciation. When I did a rough valuation last month, that initial 80k is now sitting closer to $125,000. That's a solid 56% return, which in this turbulent economic climate, I'm genuinely thrilled with. It’s certainly outpaced some of my other more traditional investments during certain stretches.
The peace of mind has been worth a lot too. Knowing I have that physical asset, sitting securely in a depository, is a comfort. It’s not just about the monetary gains, but the insurance against unforeseen circumstances. I remember a colleague scoffing at me back then, saying I was being overly cautious. Now, with everything going on globally, I feel like I made a smart move.
Anyone else out there specifically focusing on rounds for their Gold IRA? What's your experience been like with premiums and eventual liquidation plans? I’m still a ways off from retirement, but it's always good to think ahead.
